Aarakshan Hindi Movie Review
A lot has already been said and heard about Aarakshan
, thanks to the number of controversies it had to combat to hit the screens. So, when the movie opens with Saif Ali Khan being ridiculed for hailing from a lower caste in a college interview, Prakash Jha hits the nail in its head without wasting anytime. However, as the movie proceeds, the roller coaster drama takes a preachy turn, and a few speed breakers disappoint.
The maker of powerful socially relevant cinema, Prakash Jha makes another hi-wattage socio-political drama inspired by a burning societal issue caste based reservation. Besides, reservation another modern day evil addressed by Aarakshan is - monetization of education with cropping of private coaching centers at every noon and corner in the country. And just like other Prakash Jha creations including Mrityudand, Gangajal, Apharan and the recent Rajneeti, Aarakshan also unfolds the crude reality by giving audiences a 360 degree analysis of the issue with the help of well-etched characters, detailed narrative and dramatics setting. But at the same time, it needs to be mentioned that Aarakshan lacks the refinement of Rajneeti.
Aarakshan is the story of Prabhakar Anand [Amitabh Bachchan], principle of a private college in Bhopal since past 30 years, who swears by his ethics and fights for them all through the movie. Other characters in the movie include Tanvi Azmi his doting wife, his daughter Poorbi [Deepika], who is also the love interest of his dear and obedient disciple Deepak Kumar [Saif Ali Khan] and Sushant [Prateik Babbar] Poorbi and Deepaks friend. On one hand Prabhakars ideology heralds the importance of merit, while on the other his heart goes out to unprivileged students who fail to make it big in the competitive world of education. Deepak is one such student who tops the merit list with his support. And then comes Mithilesh Singh [Manoj Bajpai], Prabhakars colleague and also a scheming seller of education who robes him off his position, friends, relations and reputation by mis-using a pro-reservation statement made by Prabhakar. How Prabhakar wins back his lost dignity and pride amid many trials and tribulations form the rest of the story.
Aarakshan takes the issue head on using the right ingredients to make an impactful and meaningful movie, but loses out on the time it takes to deliver the message. Run time of approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes becomes a challenge for audiences, especially at a time when film-makers are experimenting with short and interval free movies.
The eventful first half sets the mood for a worthwhile watch with a bagful of impressive situations and impactful scenes. Apparantly, director loses the threads of narrative during the second half, which is sluggish and very long marked with a roller coaster of events that look repetitive and stuffed. For instance, at one point everyone in the movie including Bachchan, Saif, Deepika and even Prateik takes on teaching students. Also, the climax will definitely gives you goose bumps but somewhere you know that its not real. Towards the end the movie takes a preachy turn and you wait for it to end.
Talk about characters and it wont be exaggeration to say that Aarakshan belongs to Big B. Tanvi calls him the real hero in the movie and so do we believe! Watch him during the resignation scene. Saif Ali Khan has done a remarkable job as a dalit a character that is quite contrary to the suave and refined Saif in real life. But havent we seen him winning hearts as Langda Tyagi? Deepika Padukone shines out in the pool of refined performances. Tanvi Azmi is effective. But, Prateik Babbar disappoints with a stiff performance. One actor who deserves a special mention is Manoj Bajpayee he is as venomous and mean as he was in Rajneeti and its a treat to watch him create a menace, especially towards the end. There's a nice special appearance too, we won't disclose who is it.
Anjum Rajabali has definitely pushed his pen in the right direction to give dialogues that are power-packed and leave you charged. But youll definitely need hindi lessons to understand the heavy duty shudh Hindi that characters throw at you. Talking musically, before you think that movie like this doesnt need music, then remember Rajneetis music. So, Aarakshan has nothing much to offer except for Acha lagta hai and Mauka that come in the first half. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy could have brought some more spice.
On the whole, Aarakshan might not give a solution to the evil of reservation but will definitely act as a mirror to our ailing society and makes you think. So, grab your tub of pop-corn for youll need energy to sit through the long movie and do an Aarakshan for your seat for Arakshan theres no harm in watching it once!
