If you want a flat stomach, you may be considering abdominoplasty

, often referred to as a tummy tuck. However, there are a few misconceptions about it that should be cleared up before you go this route. Additionally, not everyone is a good candidate for this procedure, so make sure you are before you plan to get this done.

Some people assume that an abdominoplasty can get rid of all the fat on their stomach, helping them lose weight. However, this procedure is not meant to get rid of extra pounds, nor does it even eliminate much fat in the stomach area. It is meant to flatten out the abdominal area, eliminating excess skin that tends to hang down after pregnancy or fast fat loss. If you want to lose up to ten pounds in this area or other parts of your body, you should consider liposuction instead.

In fact, most good candidates for abdominoplasty are near their ideal weight. They have reached their goal weight and simply have excess skin or a slight pouch, which is particularly common after pregnancy. If your goal is to get rid of this, and you are otherwise satisfied with your body, you may be a good candidate for this procedure. Of course, it is best to make sure you are done having children since pregnancy or any other sudden weight gain will result in a need for another tummy tuck eventually.

You should also go into the procedure knowing that scarring from one side of your body to the area is probable. The scar from the incision will be low on your abdomen, so it should not be visible even when you are wearing a two-piece bathing suit. However, it will likely be there forever so be sure that you are prepared to deal with this reminder of your surgery long-term. Clearly, not everyone is considered a good candidate for a tummy tuck. Those who are overweight or plan to gain a lot of weight at one time, such as through pregnancy, should wait to get an abdominoplasty. It is a major surgery that leaves a long scar for life, so you should be sure that this procedure is worth it to you. If you are tired of dealing with excess abdominal skin or a pouch left over from pregnancy, you should consider a tummy tuck.
