About Keeping Nasty Odors Out Of Your Refrigerator
The refrigerator is where we store perishable foodstuffs and every kitchen restaurant needs one so as to operate smoothly
. Interestingly, the refrigerator is one of the most neglected areas of the kitchen. We scrub and mop countertops and floors but rarely do we remember to clean the interiors of a fridge until we notice a bad odor emanating from it. Bad odors from your
display coolers walk-in can put off customers because this will portray negligence on your part as the restaurant owner. A nasty odor reminds you of the neglect to which you have subjected the fridge. All it takes is a few minutes of regular cleaning to keep your refrigerator clean and odorless.
If the fridge is producing a bad odor the smell could be emanating from expired foodstuffs that have not been disposed off and/or spills that were not cleaned on time. Spilled food if left intact for a long time can even eat into the insulation of the fridge.
The first thing you have to do is to thoroughly clean the fridge. Remove all its contents and decide which ones you want to keep and which ones to discard. Chances are that youll find items you have stored for too long and which are causing the odor. Check the expiry dates of each item and throw out those that have expired. If you have foodstuffs that are starting to go bad, throw them away.
Next, take out all the removable parts of the fridge such as shelves and bins and wash them in warm soapy water. You can use a solution of two tablespoons baking soda in a liter of water for a better clean. Clean the inner parts of the fridge thoroughly and wipe them dry before replacing the fully rinsed shelves and bins.
In addition to cleaning there are simple measures that you can take to prevent bad odors in the fridge. When you put pungent foods such as fish in the fridge always keep them covered with foil because their odors tend to linger in the fridge for long. Take care not to spill food in the fridge and if you do so accidentally, make a point of thoroughly cleaning up without delay. Ensure that food does not remain in the fridge for too long because it is likely to start smelling. Also ensure that the temperature is set at the correct level so that bacteria and other microorganisms wont grow on the food and which normally results in bad odors.
You can use some readily available items to expel nasty odors. Pour some baking soda on a shallow pan and place it at the bottom of the fridge. You can do the same using coffee groundings, activated charcoal and oats, all of which are effective for absorbing unwanted odors. Alternatively, you can place a cup of vinegar or a halved lemon in the fridge for the same effect.
With a little extra effort you can keep your
display coolers walk-in and other refrigerators clean and odorless and customers will always come back to your restaurant.
