Justice represents society's need to protect communal morals that are a mix of religious

, legal and ethical beliefs. Justice also represents fairness in life. There are various types of justice in different societies. Some forms of punishment may focus on future consequences, such as access to social benefits. Others seek to restore the victim's sense of self and rehabilitate the offender by allowing the offender to directly see how they affected their victim. Another type of justice is often referred to as eye for an eye. This type simply punishes the offender in the exact same way as they injured or killed their victim. If they caused a loss of limb, they, too, would lose their limb. Likewise, if the offender causes a loss of life, they would also have to lose their life. The final type of justice just focuses on fair distribution of wealth, property and respect for different types of people.

Justice has been long personified through Lady Justice. She has been depicted holding the scales of justice, called the scales of truth, and sword since ancient Egyptian times. The scales of justice that the lady holds represent evidence of the crime. The lady gently balances the scales of justice as the evidence's weight settles. The scales of justice often have symbols inscribed on them. The symbols represent good and bad claims that are made between the victim and offender. A blindfold was added in the 15th century to represent blind justice. Justice is meant to be objective and not take creed, power or wealth into consideration. Justice should be handed down impartially at all times. Some depictions of Lady Justice show her without the blindfold. The artists that created these depictions explain that her womanly form was meant to show her impartiality. Therefore, adding a blindfold seemed redundant in their eyes. The sword stands for the punishment that will be meted out by Lady Justice after she has weighed the evidence.

Justice has become institutionalized in modern society. Individuals must rely on the court system to mete out their justice fairly. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case these days. Most individuals that seek justice through the court system fight for years for the answer they seek. Thankfully, there are ample amounts of well trained lawyers to help individuals through the court system. The lawyers fight tirelessly for their clients using their advanced knowledge of the laws and court procedures. Due to their extensive legal knowledge, lawyers are much more successful in court than those who represent themselves. The judge will often warn those representing themselves that they could be making a big mistake by not securing counsel.

Justice's three main sections, retributivism, restorative and utilitarian justice, disagree on a couple of small points. Utilitarian justice seeks to punish offenders to protect society as a whole. This type of justice pushes the individual offenders to reconsider their actions and stop committing crimes. Additionally, utilitarian justice willingly places violent or dangerous offenders in jail forever if they are a threat to the rest of the community. Retributivism focuses on the individual in hopes of restoring their ability to reason and live within the community again. Instead of focusing on punishment, this type of justice, encourages revenge. Although the offender must be punished, it should be in a way that pays the victim back as well. Restorative justice focuses on both the victim and offender. Restorative justice encourages the victim to make an impact on the offender to encourage them to repair what they have done to the victim. This approach acknowledges that crimes are intimately between the victim and offender, not the state.
