About art stretcher bars - A brief

Art stretcher bars are made of high quality wood preferably pine, as it doesn't rot or warps easily, and with good maintenance it remains sturdy for a long time. The wood used should be seasoned, sawed and polished so that it is smooth all over with smooth edges. The artist stretcher bars are adjusted and fixed together, with slits cut at edges so as to allow for movement of bars due to increase or decrease in moisture content.

How an art stretcher frame is made?

Four art stretcher bars are joined together at a time, to design a simple, rectangular-shaped or square wooden frame. Thus artist stretcher bars provide the framework called stretcher on which a canvas is attached and stretched in order to remove any creases and roughness on the surface. This stretched canvas is then further smoothened using a traditional primer known as gesso. Smooth edges should be slightly rounded on canvas stretcher bars. This reduces any pressure on the edges of the canvas and prevents tearing. Usually, a couple of staples are attached on one side of the canvas, and then a few more on the opposite side. By manipulating and moving around the four edges of the stretcher bars, rather than stapling down an entire side and then doing the same on the opposite side will ensure that the canvas surface becomes completely smooth and taut by the time one goes all the way around the canvas moving and stretching. After completion, an artwork can be framed or if the artist so desires then it can be left hanging on the stretcher bar frame on which it was painted provided the stretcher is of good quality.

Since artist stretcher bars are mostly made of wood, and wood expands and contracts due to decreased or increased moisture levels in the air, therefore the corners of the stretcher bar frames must not be permanently fixed. Instead the corners should be designed in such manner so as to allow for the movement of the wood in the presence or absence of moisture. Interlocking, butt or miter joints are the designs which can be effectively used to serve this purpose.
