About insomnia and its impact and treatment

For many artists over the time, insomnia was an inspiration and a way to success. Nabukov regarded sleep as a failure, good only for morons. Balzac wrote hundred of books under the influence of black coffee and numerous other artists wrote during white nights. For people getting ready to pass exams, sleep is an indescribable evil they would like to get rid of completely and replace it with efficient work hours. Sleeping less has become a goal in our success driven society.

Unfortunately, we are all different in our need for sleep hours, and the social need for more productivity does not change the body's needs. Indeed, lack of sufficient sleep has been associated with a variety of physical and mental ailments, including but not limited to hypertension, heart diseases, cancer and anxiety. Furthermore, the fatigue from lack of sleep makes us prone to road accidents, decreases our memory and lifespan and in general makes us more miserable beings.

As it goes, a large number of adults and children suffer from insomnia. The number varies but it is estimated to be at least 30% of the adults and about 10% of the children. Even toddlers have been shown to suffer from insomnia. In children, insomnia has been proven to be associated, even at an early age with feeding disturbances that can alter eating behavior into adulthood.

Most adults with insomnia feel bad enough because of that they medicate, self medicate or use other resources to try and improve their situation. The cost of insomnia, either direct through resource use or indirect, through absenteeism is estimated to be twelve hundred dollars per year. Many adults use and abuse a variety of prescription medications over long periods of time, despite that the scientific basis for the long term efficacy of these medications has not been clearly established. And indeed, over 70% of the patients chronically medicated for insomnia are not satisfied with their treatment and keep changing doctors.

Furthermore, these medications come with a potential for addiction and abuse, easily overlooked in people changing their psychiatrist or primary care physician at a rapid pace.

Many adults also try a variety of over the counter remedies and medication, such as valerian or melatonin. This type of substances have been largely proved to be useless when the suporting data in the literature was reviewed.

Body manipulations, such as Yoga and meditation have been proved to be largely useful, however there is a need for long term commitment and time many adults are unable of.

Recently, brain music therapy has been proposed as a new mean for the treatment of insomnia. The person's own electrical waves are converted into music using a proprietary algorhythm. Listening to this "brain music" is efficient in over 80% of the cases and lacks any side effects.

In summary, insomnia is frequent, dysrupted and hard to treat. Most medications are associated with side effects and are not effective for long term
