Academy Award Nominees Of Mexico

Academy Award winners were the topic of my last article about Mexico

, and the many talented people that call the country home. In this section we will have a gander at the folks who were nominated for awards but who, unfortunately, weren't selected. It's a great honor to be nominated, even if you don't happen to be the overall winner. Consider it like winning a bronze or silver metal at one of the Olympic games; you are still a top-level contender. On that note, find out about the nominees.

We know Anthony Quinn was the first Mexican-born actor to receive an Academy Award twice in the same category, but he also gained two nominations for Best Leading Actor. Zorba the Greek landed him the nomination in 1964, and he was previously nominated for Wild is the Wind, a movie that he starred in in 1957. A Better Life was also very well received, just last year, and Demian Bichir (Mexican-born) landed the nomination for Best Leading Actor.

Mexican women have received three nominations in the category of Best Actress. For Best Leading Actress, Salma Hayek was nominated for her role in Frida in 2002. In 1954 Katy Jurado was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Broken Lance, and the first Mexican-born actress to receive a nomination of any kind. Finally, in 2006 Adrianna Barraza was nominated for her role in Babel.

In our previous article on Mexican Academy Award Winners, we discussed the work of Emile Kuri and his two awards. In total, Kuri was nominated eight times for his work on iconic films such as Carrie, The Absent-Minded Professor, Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. And similarly to Kuri, Brigitte Broch won an Academy Award but was nominated for other work as well.

Many of Mexico's Academy Award nominations are in the field of Cinematography, as it is one area where Mexican-born talent has really excelled.. The Night of the Iguana, an infamous film of 1954, also gave Gabriel Figueroa the nomination. Over a span of ten years, John Alonzo has received two nominations; The Legend of Jimmy Blue Eyes got the first in 1965, and the second came for Chinatown. Emmanuel Lubezki received five nominations, all for films that were brilliant by any standard. The first came in 1995 for A Little Princess, then 1999 for Johnny Depp's Sleepy Hollow, and the last three were after 2005 for The New World, Children of Men and The Tree of Life. Mexican talent has also seen nominations for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Film Editing, Best Writing, Best Sound and Best Director. Multicultural teams are frequently behind the production of many of our favorite films today. No film is just one nationality. Having all those differing perspectives is part of what makes a movie truly great!
