Acai Berry Hype Completely Uncovered

Fable and legend says that in times long since gone the population of a distinct

Brazilian tribe grew so great that the surrounding rainforest could no longer supply adequate food to prevent starvation. The tribes elder statesman ruled that all new babies would have to be killed including that of his own daughter, Iaca.

So distressed by this was Iaca by the killing of her baby that she spent days grieving in her hut. Then one day, she heard the sound of a sobbing infant deep in the forest and she proceeded to check out its source. Instead of a baby she found an enormous palm, reaching into the canopy of the forest and covered with lots of purple fruit more than enough to nourish her tribe.

Now that she realized that if her tribe had known of the existence of this palm before, her baby would still be alive. This was too much for her and Iaca fell to the floor and passed away in anguish. When her body was found beneath the new tree a couple of days later, along with the new food supply high in the canopy, the tribes elder statesman named the tree after Iaca, but pronounced with her name reversed: Acai the word meaning the fruit that cries.

With this novel foodstuff the elder statesman abruptly cancelled the diktat and the tribe prospered. But it was not that straightforward at first because the acai berries grow in clusters at the top of the huge palms well over 80 feet tall. Only the most sprightly and boldest members of the tribe would climb the palms to get at the fruit clusters and chop them down.

Soon after that word came out that the acai berries gave the members of the tribe remarkable protection from polio and other diseases brought to Brazil by European invaders. It is said that most tribes that had no access to the berries were wiped out by the new diseases then sweeping the continent.

Afterwards, nearer to today, coastal people of Brazil said that acai enhanced and prolonged their energy levels while they were surfing, and the word soon spread to tourists, who then passed it on it to the rest of the world. Thus began the excitement about the so-called acai berry miracle fruit.

The acai fruit is a small purple fruit, like a grape. The goodness is enclosed completely in the pulp, which covers a sizeable seed that has no nutritional value whatsoever. The pulp is tasty rather like wine but with chocolate overtones. Alas, the pulp is a very fragile thing, and must be eaten within a day of harvesting.

Word has spread all around that the acai fruit assists with weight-loss some 30 pounds in 30 days it has been claimed, which is utter nonsense. The berry certainly does play a part in overall wellbeing, but it won't do anything to aid any person lose weight. Only exercise and a good diet can resolve that.

Another hyped-up assertion about the acai berry is in its ORAC value. ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity a way of measuring the antioxidant behaviour of biological samples. There have been claims that acai berry has an ORAC in the high thousands even more than that of grape seeds! This is completely erroneous. ORAC values vary, depending on harvesting conditions and the bodily make-up of the consumer.

Various supplement manufacturers multiply ORAC values by 100 grams to make them look elevated. This is deceiving. Actually, acai is not in the top of the chart on ORAC values. Red grapes, spinach, raspberries, gogi, and blueberries have more elevated ORAC values than acai berries.

Another piece of hype going around relating to acai is that it is cheap. It is very costly! Cheaper acai products use only small amounts of acai fruit juice and load-up the rest with less expensive juices, flavourings and fillers.

Pure acai juice is like gunk, and when fresh is undeniably not cheap. It is dark in colour, which acts as a good guide to the quality of the product.
