Are you receiving an error "Folder is not accessible--Access is denied" on your Windows XP Professional PC? This type of problem occurs when you have recently installed or upgraded your PC to Windows XP OR the folder was created on NTFS.

Error continues to occur even submitting the correct login credentials. To fix this issue below are few steps to first simple file share and then take ownership of the folder which is throwing error.

a) Click on My Computer


b) From Tools menu select Folder Option

c) Locate View tab and clear Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box in advanced settings and click on OK

d) Go to the properties of the folder which is throwing error

e) Go to Security tab, click Advanced button and then display the Owner tab

f) From the name list select your user name and then select Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box

g) OK

By doing so you may receive an error

You do not have permission to read the contents of directory Folder Name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.

h) Click Yes and then OK

Now everything would be working fine because you have reapplied the permissions and security setting on the folder which was generating errors.

Access is denied error message may be displayed on Windows 2003 or 2000 sever while accessing folder that is located on NTFS system volume. Error message "Access is Denied" continues to occur even you have the required NTFS permissions to access the file. This error occurs when you are trying to access a file that has been encrypted by another user. In this situation same user who encrypted the file will have to decrypt it. Using recovery agent is also helpful.
