To save yourself time and headache, make sure that you get the following things whenever you buy the servers and the switch to start building your network. If you have all of the proper equipment before you get started, the whole setup process will be a lot easier and you will not have to waste your time running out to the store to get the things that you have forgotten.

First off, you will need a solid supply of Ethernet cables. These are the cables that are used to connect the servers to the switch; they are then used to connect the switch itself to the main computer that is going to be used to access the servers. Without enough of these, you will not be able to string the computers together. You will not be able to use the switch at all. You should buy them in varying lengths to make sure that you can accommodate any sort of changes to the setup of the network.

Next, you will want to have power strips to use both with the servers and with the console switch. These long bars just provide you with many more outlets than can be found in the walls. If you really want to make sure your network is safe, you should buy them with power surge protectors built right in. The surge protectors will kick in if there is a flux in the power; they will shut down the line, keeping that flux from reaching and ruining the actual servers.

After that, make sure that you have some sort of a place where the computer console and the switch can be set up. Many networks are made with tall metal racks where the servers are installed. This keeps them all in close proximity to one another so that fewer cables are needed. One common way to hook the switch and the computer up to the servers is just to have a metal desk coming off these racks. It could be set up for someone to sit at; it could also be set up for a person who is standing. Either way, this makes it easy to use the network.

If you have all of the correct equipment, you will find that setting up a great network does not take very long. This all begins with a bank of servers and a console switch to connect them, but you should not forget the simple accessories that you will also need.
