The focal point of your living room, the main room in the house that tends to showcase

your personal tastes, is almost always the sofa - the most used piece of furniture, frequented daily by a multitude of people. Perhaps you agonised over its purchase, taking into consideration its style, colour and design and price of course, to display it proudly and keep it in perfect condition for as long as possible. Whether seating family and guests or just your own private respite area, your sofa is used every day for lounging, napping, reading a book or watching television, or snuggling down with a loved one.

Many of us have hung on to an old sofa for years, not wanting to part with our comfort blanket. Even when after decades of tough service, the springs have gone, the cushions are flat and the legs fall off, they can be like a well loved toy that you can't bear to throw away but that you no longer wish to play with. You can never allow your centrepiece to just fade into the background, so this well-loved but eventually neglected part of your realm leaves you with two choices; revamp or replace.

Treading the boards of the custom-made sofa will ensure you have a toy that doesn't break with longer guarantees and devoted years of service but whatever your decision, you can breathe fresh life into an old friend or compliment a new one with a few well chosen accessories. Cushions will give an immediate look of comfort and colour and can transform plain shades into a welcoming embrace after a tiring day at the office. Consider also the use of throws, which will have the dual purpose of protecting the sofa from spills or the sticky hands of children but which in the case of an old sofa, can change the colour, texture and pattern of the existing material to fit in with a new room design.

Accessories can also change the mood and occasion, bringing the room and your sofa to life. Consider therefore, changing accessories to accentuate the ambience. For example, the use of rich velvets and faux fur for a romantic night in or seasonal patterns for holidays such as Easter and Christmas. All this can be achieved by a few scatter cushions and throws at a minimal cost.

Good lighting in your living space can also be used and changed to suit the atmosphere you are aiming for. Don't be afraid to experiment with colours and design too; try using accent colours from a feature wall or reflecting a large picture in the room. Footstalls can be effective to add colour to a room too, and as well as adding comfort, they can also provide additional seating for guests.

As the focal point of your living space, your sofa should - and can - be much more than just a practical place to sit; it should be inviting and comforting, enabling you to unwind and relax. But think how much more enjoyable your sofa could be not just to sit on but to look at too! As the centrepiece of the room, why not give it new lease of life with some bold colours, and reintroduce it as the former glory that it really is.
