Accidents On And Around University Grounds On Your Bike

University students are more likely to cycle and more likely to be in accidents

, several studies recently concluded. They also concluded that cycling was safer than not cycling, but when you're on campus and around, what should you be aware of?

Drunken students

By far and away, the majority of accidents on campus and on the outskirts of campuses, and near student accommodation involve drunken students. Whether this is because they tend to congregate and are in most cases between 18 and 23, or if it's another factor is being studied at present, but these accidents usually involve students stepping out in front of unsuspecting cyclists, or drunken students borrowing or using their own bikes, the simple fact is that drinking and biking just don't mix.

If you're returning to campus after a day away, or you're in a student housing area of town late at night, be aware of drunken revellers, and ensure that you're going slightly slower than you need to when passing groups of students, just in case. Ensure that you're using lights and don't be afraid to ask them to move out of your way.

On campus problems

Sometimes it doesn't take drunken students to cause problems. Bike that have been tampered with, or at peak rush hours around campus mean that cycling can be hazardous, so be aware at all times of where your bike is chained and how safe it is there. Walk on campus, even if you're running late and ensure your bike is adequately secured in an appropriate place. Check your bike thoroughly before riding home.

Another common biker complaint is the groundskeepers and their inattention to what is going on around them. There have been accidents in the past when cars or lorries have backed up and caught a biker unaware. You should try to be more aware of your surroundings, and make sure that you're not in the path of anything reversing where possible.

And the plain bizarre....

There have been several bizarre accidents caused by seats being stolen, or brakes loosened so be aware that something that seems like a harmless prank, or mindless vandalism can cause injuries. Consider removing your own seat and taking it with you if possible, and always carry a toolkit in your rucksack just in case.

Campuses are a hive of activity, so it's always important to pay attention to what is going on around you, and be aware that not everyone is as safety or travel conscious as you - accidents on campus most commonly happen after football or rugby matches, after events at the SU, and in the early morning and at dusk. Being aware that you could be in an accident around these times will prepare you for any stupidity, vandalism or tired commuters missing you travelling along with them.
