Accounting And Registering For Classes
Whatever the highest degree was that I could earn
, that was the one that I wanted to get. And while I still dont have my PhD (yet), I can still remember what my first day of college life was like.
As with most other people who have come and gone to college, if youre from a small town, went to a small high school or are away at college for the first time, things dont really start to hit you until you are by yourself for the first time and actually have a moment to think about it all. There is a lot that goes into making a university run smoothly. For instance, my first week of college was a whirlwind of orientations, lots of walking around, finding and missing buses to various buildings and trying to remember my way back to my dorm room at the end of the day.
As a former collegiate athlete who was on scholarship, I had to get to school an entire week and half earlier than the normal kids so that I could go through an entirely separate set of motions that included physicals, CPR training, doctors appointments, orientation and of course, practices. By the time the regular kids were starting to trickle in for their move in days and orientations, etc., I already had my dorm room set up, all of my books ready to go and had sort of figured out my way around the campus. It was a lot to take in. Much of this, I had to thank our wonderful student-athlete advisors for.
As student athletes, we not only had our regular, departmental advisors (who would assist us with knowing what classes to take for our desired degree), but we also had student athlete advisors who oversaw all of the classes that we were taking and who double checked behind our academic advisors to make sure that we were taking the right classes and that those classes werent going to conflict with practices, etc. At the end of the day, all of these advisors and meetings and people who were involved in making the lives of the athletes a little bit easier so that we could multi-task, were being paid by the university. Granted, if the university didnt have some sort of top-notch management system in place, I am only too sure that my life would have been much more chaotic and beyond stressful. However, rarely do we think about these sorts of things- the very same types of things that allow us to enjoy college life.
