Accutane - Are The Side Effects Worth The Results?

Accutane is a heavy-duty drug

Accutane is a heavy-duty drug. It should only be used as a last resort, after you've exhausted all other possible options. Before I was able to find a permanent cure for my acne, I was on Accutane for an extended period of time. Not only were the side effects awful, it also didn't work to totally clear up my acne. If you're thinking about starting Accutane treatment, consider the following consequences before going through with it.

The most serious side effects:

Accutane can cause devastating birth defects, which include mental retardation and physical deformation. You cannot take Accutane if you're pregnant, and if you become pregnant while on the drug, you must consult a doctor immediately.

They're not joking around about this. When I got my packages, each and every pill had an anti-pregnancy symbol emblazoned on it. The birth defects caused by Accutane are incredibly severe.

In addition, because of how Accutane is processed by the liver, you cannot drink any alcohol during treatment due to a risk of liver failure. You need to have blood drawn once a month while on the drug to ensure that your liver toxicity is at a normal level.

What I experienced:

When I was on Accutane, I felt like all the moisture had been sucked right out of my body. My skin cracked and split all over, my lips bled, my eyes dried up so much I couldn't (and still can't) wear contact lenses, and I suffered from regular nosebleeds. Not a pleasant experience, to say the least.

What you might experience in addition to the above:

I was fortunate enough to avoid the following side effects, but you should be warned about them nonetheless. Accutane may also cause you to experience chest pain, decreased night vision, constant fatigue, thinning hair, vomiting, bowel inflammation... And the list goes on.

There have also been claims that Accutane causes serious depression, but no such claim has been medically proven. I myself didn't suffer from depression when I was taking the drug; I was just disappointed that it didn't work out.

Despite all of the risks, Accutane does have the potential to work miracles on some people. Unfortunately, I wasn't one of them. In the end, however, I was able to find an acne medication that cleared up my skin perfectly, without the awful side effects I experienced when I was on Accutane.

If you're thinking about getting a prescription for Accutane, I urge you to consider all of the risks and the side effects associated with treatment.

I suffered from acne for years, but when I found a medication that worked, my entire life changed for the better. There's no reason that the same can't happen for you.
