Accutane Side Effects Bowel Injuries May Merit A Defective Drug Lawsuit
Swiss-based Roche Pharmaceuticals has seized profits of more than $1 billion yearly
by marketing its defective drug Accutane - a drug causing incurable, lifelong injuries. These injuries don't involve facial blemishes, but rather an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which may mandate removal of the colon. Such a fate faces many of the 5 million Americans who, since 1982, have taken defective drug Accutane.
Acne Makeovers or Accutane LawsuitWhat substantiates this? One source is the legal arena. There, six Accutane lawsuits have resulted in jury awards totaling $56 million for victims of Roche's negligence. The largest compensatory damages award so far has been over $25 million for an Alabama man whose colon had to be surgically removed after he took Accutane as an acne treatment.
For more confirmation, check with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It originally approved Accutane in 1982, but since then the FDA has revised this stance by placing a warning on the defective drug. An FDA official even has called Accutane "a potentially dangerous prescription medication." It's clear that the FDA supports victims' rights in Accutane side effects issues.
Roche itself also has confirmed that Accutane is a significant problem. How? When Roche was hit with Accutane lawsuits and jury verdicts favoring plaintiffs, it suddenly decided that it would back off, and in 2009 it removed Accutane from the market in America. Roche claims it did this because generic Accutane had gotten too competitive. But it's obvious from the timing of Roche's courtroom defeats that they had an impact on its decision.
Yet remarkably, Accutane is still sold by Roche - just in other countries. And in America, people still can purchase - by prescription -- generic Accutane known as Claravis (from Ranbaxy), Sotret (from Barr Laboratories) and Amnesteem (from Mylan/Cardinal Health). Like the original Accutane, generic Accutane has the active ingredient Isotretinoin, which clears up complexions but, in doing so, can cause irreparable harm to an innocent person's digestive system.
Such Accutane side effects can include an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis (UC). These are incurable, lifelong conditions which often necessitate surgeries and can involve removal of the colon.
