Ace Your Next Job Interview- with the Help of a Great Resume!
Few job seekers understand just how large a role their resume will play during an interview
. To a hiring manager, a resume is like the Cliff's Notes for a candidate; it communicates their unique value, demonstrates a track record of career success, and highlights relevant training. The more effective your resume is across these 3 areas, the easier it becomes to expand upon them during the interview phase.
1) IDENTIFY (AND PLAY UP) YOUR UNIQUE VALUE
If you haven't the foggiest notion as to what your unique value is, don't panic. Go through your work history. What skills have been responsible for your greatest successes? For example, if you're a Project Manager, did you excel in managing cross-functional staff, rigorously controlling costs, or attaining tight deadlines? Create a list of 3-4 of these skills. Now create a brief opening paragraph at the start of your resume touching upon each of them.
Having an opening paragraph ensures your strongest traits are communicated right off the bat, spurring reader interest in delving into your work history.
2) NOTHING SUCCEEDS LIKE SUCCESS
Hiring agents aren't interested in a work history that reads like a succession of job descriptions. They're looking for accomplishments, the more quantifiable the better. Give them what they're looking for by including a "Key Accomplishments" or similar section for every job held during the past 10-15 years listing successes (in bullets). For example, a Sales Representative job could contain the following "Key Accomplishment":
-Spurred division growth from 150 to 3000+ users spanning Central and South America, applying honed skills in account conversions.
Having a "Key Accomplishments" section for important positions serves as natural talking points for an interviewer, allowing you to elaborate and shine.
3) DON"T LET YOUR TRAINING GET LOST IN THE SHUFFLE
Relevant training is prized amongst hiring agents, and often critical to reaching the interview stage. Don't make the mistake of obscuring it within an "Education" section! Mention it in the opening paragraph of your resume (as outlined above) and create a separate "Advanced Training" section following education listing it.
