Achieving Your Goals - The Key To Success

One of the keys to a successful exercise program is to create a supportive environment for yourself

, and therefore, your exercise program. A supportive environment means that whether you are at home, at work, or participating in your physical activity, everything and everyone provides a positive reinforcement of your program. Creating a supportive environment can be the key to achieving your goals.

Spend some time planning your program, just as an athlete spends time planning. Although exercise can be spontaneous, it is better adhered to when planned, and when children are involved this is even more crucial.

Planning can include contacting a training partner, looking for volunteers from the family who will sacrifice one morning a week for a walk, wording up family on your exercise plans, planning times that you know you can keep. (There's no use saying to yourself that you will get up at 5.30 a.m. on a day you have to work for 15 hours.) Remember also to organise cooking menus. Be sure to set aside time for yourself.

The concept of a training partner, such as someone who you go to the gym with or someone you walk with, is extremely crucial to the success of your supportive environment. When choosing a training partner and times to train, it may be beneficial to schedule your training partner at the end of the week, when you are more likely to be unmotivated, and therefore, more likely to miss your session.

Many people exercise early on in the week but tend not to do so late in the week. If you have exercised exceptionally well during the week and then come Friday it's wet outside, you may be inclined to stay indoors, whereas your training partner will drive you to simply rug up and train.

Scheduling an early Friday morning walk that lasts for 90 minutes before work, for example, is a extremely difficult task as by this time you will undoubtedly be tired. If your training partner understands this, then you are both working towards this challenge and you are more likely to succeed together.

When finding your training partner, remember that your goals may be different to theirs. Your motivation to develop a program may be greater than your partner's, so do not initiate a five-morning-a-week program with your partner because your motivation should at least get you through two sessions on your own.

Suggesting a five-day-a-week training program with your exercise partner can come unstuck if your partner misses two sessions, loses motivation, begins to feel negative or likely to fail. Do all you can in keeping the environment supportive. Family members make the best training partners. They are more likely to understand your goals, plus there is the advantage of proximity.
