Acne is formed by a collection of sebum (oil), bacteria and dead cells trapped in the lining of the hair follicle (skin pore). Acne is not simply a situation in adolescence, 20-40% of adults are problems with acne.

Causes

Acne occurs when tiny holes on the surface of the skin called pores become clogged. Each pore is an opening to a canal called a follicle, which contains a hair and a sebaceous gland. When glands produce too much oil, pores can become blocked, accumulating dirt, debris and bacteria. The blockage is called a plug, or comedo.
