Acne is a serious problem in Australia, affecting as high as 80% of our population. One in five sufferers have not tried any treatments to combat their skin problem. Research also shows that only 50% of people currently suffering from acne have found a product that works for them.

Despite the common perception that acne is a teen issue, the research has found that almost half (47%) of 18 to 44 year olds have had a breakout in the last three months.


For the one in four Australians currently suffering with acne, the condition is not purely cosmetic, but the source of real concern and heartache. Eighty-two per cent of sufferers say that their skin has held them back in some way with 61% less confident because of their skin; One third (31%) avoiding social events; and over half (52%) feeling self conscious as a result of their acne.

Victoria is the spottiest state in Australia with 51% (1.2 million) of the current population suffering from acne with Queensland (48%) and New South Wales (46%) closely following. Nationally one in five current acne sufferers are depressed because of their skin and 1.025 million of those suffering with pimples would rather be overweight than have acne.

Many have been desperate and tried every product available. People try prescription medication that can be seen as a last resort and still have no effect and can sometimes make acne even worse. Prescription medication can also have some pretty interesting side effects which should be avoided.

Typically, Australian acne sufferers try an average of three to four different acne treatments, but some are desperate enough to experiment with 15 or more. I had acne for 15 years from the age of 12. However these statistics are a wake up call. Pimples are painful but they need to be kept in perspective - particularly as some old wives tale treatments can end up doing more harm than good. Although you might have to try different treatments to find an effective solution for you, it's important you use clinically tested products that are effective and gentle on your skin.
