Stress and lifestyle play a small but important role in your skin. Acne occurs when you pores become clogged with bacteria and oils. The cause of acne is different for everyone as it can be caused by hormones, genetics or poor hygiene. The important thing to remember is that your skin is an organ, the largest organ in fact, and needs to be handled with care. Acne begins as an internal issue and may require oral medication and topical creams to control or prevent it. If you are experiencing a lot of stress, it will affect the health of your skin. When you have a lot of stress, your body has a chemical reaction to it. Your adrenal glands work overtime and emit cortisol, a hormone, into your blood. Consequently, you sweat more and that causes your skin to produce more oil. Everyone has stress, it is unavoidable unfortunately. Find ways in which you may be able to reduce it, as it is different for everyone whether it is yoga, meditating, working less hours or taking a vacation. One thing that works for everyone is exercising. Exercising should be a regular part of your routine to begin with, but it actually does help to give you more energy as well as reduce your stress. Your environment plays a role in the health of your skin. For example, if you work outside in a field such as construction, you are exposing yourself to more sun that the average person as well as weather, chemicals, pollution and dirt. Even those that work in fast food places are exposed to more oils than the average person as it is emitted in the air and you don't even know it. Take a look around your job and analyze whether or not it could be affecting the health of your skin. Again, it won't cause acne, but could be a factor in clogging your pores or damaging your skin. Get plenty of sleep! The recommended amount is eight hours a day and I know for most of us, that's just not possible, however, studies have shown that a full night of sleep can improve your skin. Your body's immune system is working while you sleep and fighting off bacteria and infections. Whether you sleep during the day or sleep at night, it is beneficial to your complexion. Stay away from the sun! Well, not completely, as a small amount of sun each day is good for you, but it doesn't do your skin any good. The sun contributes to dryness in your skin and when your skin is dry, it tells your body to go ahead and start producing more oil in order to compensate. Your skin is also sloughing dead skin cells when exposed to the sun and dead skin cells mixed with an increased production of oil will only contribute to more pimples. So not only will it cause cancer and wrinkles, it will not solve your acne problems. Talk to your dermatologist about the best skin care for you.
