When acne surfaces in mild state you will see mainly blackheads and whiteheads, which are easy to treat. Naturally, when acne is in mild state, you need not go for rigorous treatment forms. Most people with acne seek to get rid of the problem using over-the-counter medicines. Only a few people go for consultation with a doctor. When it is done in the initial stage, it is easy to get over the problem even before it starts seriously bothering you.

Now, a quick discussion on the approach to treat mild acne will be worth the while. Generally, OTC medicines are salicyclic acid and benzoyl peroxide. These medicines can be effective on blackheads and whiteheads. Before you apply these medicines, wash the acne affected area using mild soap and lukewarm water at twice every day. This will avoid presence of excess oil on your skin and also the dead skin cells.

There are instances where these OTC products have caused dryness, redness and peeling of skin. If you experience skin peeling off, use a moisturizer that is free from oil. You need to understand that it takes a little while for your acne affected skin to accept the medication. An occurrence of irritation is not a good sign and it is a message for you to consult your doctor. It may take anywhere between a couple of weeks to a couple of months for this treatment to give you results. If your acne is not cured even beyond this period, stop self-medication and go for doctor's prescription.
