There are numerous ways to treat acne problems. Acne treatments range from simple medication to various types of therapy. The management of acne requires careful considerations of your options in order to decide which is best for you.
The primary cause of acne is when follicles become blocked. The overproduced and naturally occurring oils and dead skin form a clog that can gather certain bacteria. The bacteria then lead to lesions, redness, scaring and many other problems.
There are a number of triggers that are believed to cause this overabundance of oils and dead skin which cause the blockage. Some of the believed triggers are hormones, including one called androgen which is produced in abundance during puberty. Other triggers are believed to be genetics, psychological stress, infections and diet.
In order to treat acne, you must first understand the four main ways that the problem can be addressed. One of the primary ways of treatment is by addressing the shedding of oils and dead skin. This can be done by topical retinoids applied to the skin or by oral retinoids that are vitamin A derivatives taken daily. They work primarily by reducing the secretion of oils and proteins which can trigger acne. They can, however, have a number of side-effects, especially oral retinoids which can cause liver damage and birth defects.
Another widely-used method of treating acne is by killing the bacteria that gather at the site. This can be done with such commonly used medications as benzoyl peroxide or antibiotics. Benzoyl peroxide is quite effective but has certain minor side-effects such as dry skin, redness and sensitivity to the sun. Antibiotics, on the other hand, have started to become less effective as most of the bacteria have developed a resistance to them.
A third approach is by dealing with the inflammation. Anti-inflammatories are useful for mild to moderate acne and help significantly with the cosmetic effects of the condition. They are also believed to not only relieve inflammation but also the scaring that it can cause.
The final method of treating acne involves hormone manipulation. This method is usually used with female patients. A number of hormones are used primarily to block the production of the hormone androgen, which causes glands to increase in size and produce more oil. By preventing the production of this hormone, acne can be reduced or prevented.
