Acronis Online Backup Review: Should You Consider It?
Acronis is a well-known company in the backup business
. Their product may appeal to some users, particularly business users, who want an interface that allows them to control the backup to a significant degree.
Acronis offers all the standard features that come with most online backup services. For example, it uses an SSL transfer service, which ensures that your files aren't intercepted and accessed during the backup transaction. It also offers a file manager feature that allows you to move your files and folders into your backup queue easily. The features are solidly designed and reliable, but there is little about it that is any different from any of the other providers out there.
You can upload up to 250 gigabytes of data from five different computers with the Acronis backup system. This is a bit more flexible than some of the other offerings out there, as far as the number of computers you can use, but 250 gigabytes of data storage is not very much considering the hard drive sizes of most computers.
Pros
Acronis is built by a reliable company with a good track record. You don't have to worry about them closing up overnight and the technical support is always available and very competent. There are also extensive help resources available online that can get you going with their products. The SSL encryption and the regular updates to their service are also advantages in terms of the security of their platform and the types of features that it offers.
Cons
Acronis offers a very small amount of backup space for the money. Allowing five computers to share a combined 250 gigabytes of space is rather unrealistic. This isn't a service that's going to allow you to backup all of your videos, images, audio and other files. If you're a heavy multimedia user, you're not going to be able to get everything you want onto the small storage space. In this regard, Acronis may be better left to those who have only text files and office documents to back up.
Analysis
Acronis does have a good system of data centers and excellent tech support. This means that your data is generally secure with the company and that you shouldn't have any trouble accessing it because of technical difficulties. Beyond that, however, the company really doesn't offer much for the money that you spend compared to what other vendors are willing to do for their customers.
Conclusion
Acronis may be a suitable service for those who have a lot of office documents that they need to backup and who need a basic, no frills interface that allows them to do that. You're not going to find anything particularly bad about the Acronis service but you're not going to find anything particularly good about it, either. The amount of data storage that they offer for the price that they charge is simply not competitive with what other vendors are willing to offer customers. This isn't an incompetent or bad service, but most users can certainly do better.
