Acrylic Design: How far will they take it?

As time moves on our understanding of materials increases and the technology we have to manipulate these materials advances. Due to recent advancements in materials technology it is possible to do things with materials, such as acrylic, that have never been tried before. The flexibility of these materials can be astounding when you consider their uses. Acrylic is now used in a vast array of roles in various different industries. The way in which these materials can be moulded and sculpted means they are perfect for a wide range of uses. Simple domes made of acrylic alone have several different uses: they can provide protective covers for security cameras, be part of a window display (especially where light is required, considering acrylic's transparency), provide covers for flower arrangements or sculptures, or be used as the basis for an aquarium.

Although something like an acrylic dome is a simple structure, it has come to be used by various corporations in an array of different roles in industry. The material's strength and transparency make it perfect for use as an aquarium or for artistic displays. However, there are many companies that are not only producing acrylic designs in simple designs for practical uses, but are now realising the lack of limits on this material and its uses, allowing them to use it to create stunning pieces of art.

Acrylic has been used in variety of ambitious, artistic projects lately, such as the fabrication of a gigantic yet functioning Dunhill watch, or the innovative staircase design in French luxury leather company Longschamp's New York boutique. These projects show us that not only are more innovative acrylic projects possible, but that companies are willing to enter into such projects, too.

Talbot Designs is one of Europe's largest acrylic design and plastic fabrication companies, and has used the flexibility of acrylic as a material to their advantage, creating such wonders as multi-coloured wall displays and an interactive water centrifuge. Companies like Talbot go out to use acrylic to its full capacity, and make that which was thought impossible, possible.

As materials technology continues to advance and companies like Talbot push acrylic to its limit, it will be interesting to see what creations the acrylic fabrication industry will make next.
