Introduction
Introduction. You can be a successful actor.
I repeat. If you WANT to be a successful actor, you CAN be a successful actor.
There are hundreds of sources that can teach you the basics of acting, so that is not what I'm here to do. I am not an expert on acting, but I can teach you how you can become the success you want to be. Perhaps you are already a seasoned actor, but are somehow stuck in limbo. The truth is, you don't have to be GREAT to be a successful actor. You don't have to be GREAT LOOKING to be a successful actor. What you need is proper knowledge, proper experience, proper marketing, and visibility.
1. Proper Knowledge. Knowledge is what you get from reading. Knowledge is what you get from going to school. It is the basis of any craft, hobby, or profession. If you don't have the knowledge to do something, you are going to have a very difficult time getting experience. Knowledge is important. Knowledge is the reason that I try to spend at least eight hours a week in my local book store reading.
In the field of acting, there are many paths to knowledge. Many colleges and high schools offer theatre. Most colleges should offer advanced acting courses and some may offer complete focus on the subject. There are many books and videos on the subject. And, there are many independent instructors that may be retired, or are just looking for some extra money. I personally find eBooks such as the Acting Technique E-Book to be a great resource for learning.
But if you get one thing out of this, do not ever forget, knowledge is not experience. Just ask the college graduate who never did anything with his life.
2. Proper Experience. Experience is the key to everything. People who are afraid to do things never go anywhere in life. I've seen it suggested that the European school systems are performing so much better than the American school systems because the Europeans focus on experience. They take their kids places and have more hands on learning. European students are gaining valuable hands on learning, while American students are becoming more and more isolated inside their stuffy technology-laden classrooms.
Not only is experience a good thing, but it's not good to do the same thing over and over again. When I needed a change of pace from filmmaking, my business partner Christopher J. Adams and I opened a business called SwordWares.Com which sells samurai swords.
The results we saw with SwordWares.Com early on, were mediocre at best. We were tempted to shut the site down after three months. Well, instead of shutting the site down, we followed through and ended up learning new concepts that will ultimately help our film career.
The point is this. If you're in a career limbo, you probably need more experience. It may be that you haven't worked on enough films or plays. Play as many different TYPES of characters that you can. Even if you have to work for free, just do it.
3. Proper Marketing. Now, assuming experience is not an issue, you're going to have to take your experience and figure out how you want to market yourself. I said before that great looks are not a requirement of being a great actor.
Many of the great actors in movies and theatre have very apparent flaws. It's a little known fact, but people are attracted to people with flaws. This holds especially true in the field of comedy. Many particularly unattractive actors have had their fair share of fame in the field of comedy, remember the Three Stooges? Based on your experience, proper research, and even the help of a good acting instructor, you should be able to figure out your niche. Once you figure out that niche, it's time to focus on it.
4. Proper Visibility. If you already know what type of work best suits you, visibility comes next. You want both professionals and consumers to know who you are. You want to play roles that suit you, and you want to be prominent. But that isn't all. In order to get better parts, and possibly start even getting PAID to do your work, you're likely going to want an agent (I wouldn't worry about money too much, because it will certainly come with time and EXPERIENCE). An agent will get you professional work, which in turn, will give you more exposure to consumers.
Don't forget this key point: Many actors do not make a lot of money because they are great actors! Many actors make money because they are recognizable and serve as a marketing engine for movies or plays.
The key to making money is to make yourself in-demand. Another tactic you may want to employ is online marketing. The internet is accessed by millions upon millions of people worldwide. Making use of the internet is almost a necessity in the world of today.
Conclusion. You now know the four factors that will lead to your success. It's very important to be well developed in all the areas I mentioned. You don't want to be caught with a lot of visibility and exposure only to fall flat on your face and ruin your chances of success because you don't have the knowledge or experience it takes to be a good actor.
There is one other thing I should mention: positive thought. If you aren't positive, there is a slim chance that you will succeed. You need to believe that you can act successfully. You're going to have a tough time convincing others than you can, if you can't even convince yourself.
Positive thought is the basis of Wallace D. Wattles' The Science of Getting Rich, an acclaimed book on creating a successful life. And, although it takes a somewhat fantastical twist on the logic of Wattles popular book, The Secret is a good example of how one should THINK.
