Actuated Valve
Actuated Valve
Valves are an important component in many systems, and there are several different types of valves designed to suit different purposes. When referring to actuated valves, these are a type of valve that is opened and closed to control the flow of fluid through the system.
A mechanically actuated valve is one that requires an external device or force to operate. The device that controls the valve is the actuator, and the valve is known as an actuated valve. An example in your own home of an actuated valve is in your dishwasher. After you have loaded last night's dirty dishes into the tray, you shut the door and press the button. As you do this, it turns on an electrical signal which then acts upon a metal coil, which triggers an electromagnetic pull to open the actuated valve and release the flow of water. When the electrical force is stopped, meaning that the dishwasher is turned off, the magnetic field disappears and the spring shuts so that the actuated valve closed again.
Some valves operate using a combination of different sources to power them, such as valves that are both automatic and actuated valves, or manual and actuated valves. For example, your toilet tank has an automatic shutoff float, but also requires manual opening.
There are too many different types of actuated valves to list, but the majority of them can be divided into two main groups. These are Stop Valves and Check Valves.
Stop Valves
These are used to stop or partially shut off the flow of a fluid through a system. Stop valves are a type of actuated valve that are controlled by the movement of the valve stem. These include globe valves, gate valves, butterfly valves and ball valves. There are also plug valves and needle valves, which can be considered in the stop valve category as well.
Check Valves
Check valves are very different, and are used to allow fluid to flow through a system in only one direction. They are operated by the flow of the fluid through the piping. There are many different types of check valves, including lift valves, swing valves, and ball valves.
When a liquid flow system is designed, the engineers choose the right type of valve to use so that the flow can be controlled in the most efficient way. With so many different types of valves to choose from, there is a valve suited for every purpose and device out on the market. From huge industrial actuated valves to tiny ones used in common home appliances, valves are everywhere and they do a lot more hard work for us in our daily lives than we realize.
