It has been a difficult couple of months for me - and I believe, for most - but seeds are being sown, curiosity is increasing and word of mouth is progressing as tentative whispers.
There's no doubt, if you study this column frequently enough, that I've been finding freelancing hard and uninspiring lately. As soon as Christmas was out of the way in which I used to be buoyed up with plans and drive but I didn't envision that other people would ease on their own into January at a snail's tempo. So, a slow month and an incident which knocked my self-confidence, sadly, took its toll.
I pride myself, that within the three years I've been freelancing (both part-time and full-time) I've usually received glowing praise from my clients.
Sloughened and self-pitiful
A new consumer lately arrived along who needed their web copy re-written. They'd merged with another company who provided comparable services plus they wanted 1 web site depicting the very best of the new company. For weeks I waited for any short - for one, I prefer to have, in black and white, just what the client is expecting (even if only a paragraph or two), and two, I was uncertain what services the new, reformed company was keeping and which they had been discarding.
Following a whilst, it became obvious that I would have already been waiting for this brief until armageddon, so I suggested I put with each other a tough draft of what I imagined the new company would look like, just so that the consumer could rapidly dissect what had to stay and what required to go - as well as seeing the proposed writing style.
"Great, I like it," they stated, happily, on receipt. "I'll have to run it past other colleagues, though." No problem, I said. A couple of days later on I obtained a curt message stating the draft was as well 'rough'. "It has to become perfect for our firm," they stated.
I tried reiterating it had been what it was - a draft - however it was obvious I'd lost the consumer. I could (and, most likely, should) have charged for my time but I doubt they'd have compensated my bill.
I centered intently on this series of events for days and it impacted the way I promoted myself. I doubted I used to be great at what I did and even found myself checking out the Jobcentre web site - not that there was any solace there.
Who loves ya' baby?
This self-pitying cloud, thankfully, started to clear; a few my long-standing customers gave me some great feedback to other function I had done and I started to focus on the percentage of my clients whom are satisfied to the ones that weren't - all one of them.
It created me realise that, although situations don't alter, how we think about them and what we consider from the expertise is vital. Chalking this episode as much as experience didn't make the consumer run back again to me but my alter of attitude stopped it affecting the rest of my business and freelancing work.
As January draws to a shut, new opportunities are sparking which make me feel more motivated that things will function out well. It seems to be, the much more positive I feel, the much more I could make the best of a situation and the more I can spot an opportunity or advantage from it too.
It's not usually about you
You cannot change how other individuals act - but you are able to change the way you REACT. As long as you realize you've done your very best and aimed to please the customer - which, as a freelancer, is really a requisite - your clients' perceptions of your function can't be managed. Consequently, don't automatically presume the issue is with you.
Phrase of mouth is important for any freelancer but I'd wager for each and every one unruly, difficult-to-please consumer, you have ten much more within the wings who'd sing your praises all day long. That's what you need to remind your self every now and again.
If you get customers returning to you, that's praise enough, because if they were unhappy together with your service they'd make certain they utilized an additional freelancer.
Focus around the great stuff. Listen towards the poor, and if there's something you are able to alter or improve on - great! But occasionally, you just have to let things go.
