Add Stylish Storage Space To A Laundry Room
Laundry rooms are one of those utilitarian spaces often associated with drudgery and everyday chores
. Your laundry room may double as a utility room and/or mudroom and chances are you would be happier if you could gain more storage and style in this functional space.
Incorporate and customize these solutions to make your laundry/utility/mudroom a space that fits your needs while looking just as stylish as the rest of the house.
Functionality Issues
A laundry room needs to work with you, not against you. Reducing all clutter will make the room more efficient, and your first order of business is to free up as much floor space as possible. A long countertop is an ideal solution because it offers a place to fold clothes.
If your countertop does not have cabinets or drawer bases underneath, purchase a few canvas laundry hampers on wheels. Use them to sort laundry then slide them under the counter when not in use. This will allow you to do away with freestanding laundry hampers and you will gain more floor space.
A fold-down wall mounted ironing board is another space saving solution: The board is always handy but is not sitting in the middle of the room where it tends to collect other clutter. A retractable clothes line is a great option for hanging damp items on hangers or for hanging items up when ironing. Or, purchase an adjustable shower curtain rod that you can stretch in an unused alcove for the same purpose. Free-standing drying racks that are preferred for drying sweaters and delicate items can be folded away until they are needed.
Install cabinets or open shelving over the washer/dryer to round up laundry detergent and related supplies. Extra storage can also be created between the washer and dryer with a narrow roll-out cabinet that is designed specifically for this purpose.
If you have a laundry sink in the room with open space below, add rolling carts for other supplies and cover the front of the sink with a stylish skirt made from leftover fabric or an old tablecloth.
Multi-purpose Room
If your laundry room doubles as a mudroom, add a storage bench that will give you place to sit when removing shoes while also providing a little extra storage space. You will find benches with hinged tops that let you hide a multitude of glove, hats, mittens, etc., as well as styles with shoe racks below to contain a host of shoes.
If your room is large enough, you may want to consider an organizational unit that offers open storage cubbies with hooks for coats, leashes, purses and backpacks and shelves that hold baskets full of everyday items. In a tighter space, wall hooks and a coat rack can add functionality with style.
Use the space above a window or entry by adding an open wall shelf and use it to display your favorite flower vases and pots, figurines or collectibles.
Now add some decorative wall art, framed finger paintings from the kids, family photos or anything that personalizes the space, and your organized multi-functional laundry room will be both good-looking and hardworking.
