Self help groups
Experience shows that combining group sessions with a 12 Step programme can significantly reduce the likelihood that the addict will resume harmful obsessive behaviours.
To achieve this, a combination of written work, peer group feedback, interpersonal group therapy and one-to-one counselling is always recommended, but research shows that addicts who follow a 12 Step recovery programme and join self-help groups achieve a much higher rate of recovery as well, with a reduced chance of relapse.
Regularly used as part of recovery in rehabilitation centres as they offer a continued source of support, maintenance and change, a 12 Step programme assists addicts to take control of their lives where possible, and to come to terms with that which they are unable to control.
