Addressing Back Pain During Pregnancy
This can be one of the most exciting times of your life
. You are having a child!
The thought of having your own child growing inside of you for the next 9 months can be an exciting thought. It will only be a matter of time before you have your own little bundle of joy.
In the meantime, you unfortunately have to deal with the nasty side effects of your pregnancy. This could include morning sickness, mood swings, or very strange eating habits.
One of the other more common side effects of a women's pregnancy is back pain. Many women have to deal with this pain in addition to the pain of other side effects.
The causes of this unfortunate pain can be quite self-explanatory to most. You have a lot of new weight added to your body, which can throw your center of gravity off and give added stress to your spine.
So if it almost a guarantee that you will feel some of this pain, how can you deal with it? Here are some great tips that you can follow to make your pregnancy as pain-free as possible:
Have good posture: As I said before, when you have a baby hanging around your stomach, your center of gravity changes and moves forward. If you practice the same posture techniques from when you were not pregnant, you could stretch muscles and have increased back pain.
This is why you need to use your head and change your posture for the better! There are a couple different ways that you can make your posture better.
You can push your buttocks under and pull your shoulders back as far as you can. After you do this, practice sitting straight up while holding this position and this will do wonders for your posture.
Have better sleeping positions: One thing that you should do not do is sleep on your back! Women who are used to doing this more often might have more trouble with this one, but it is so important!
Sleeping on your back can cause a lot of strain on it. The best thing to do during your pregnancy is sleep on your side.
This will ensure that all of your added weight will not be sitting right on top of your spine, which will increase discomfort. Also, when you are sleeping on your side, make sure one of your knees is bent so that you can maintain proper blood flow.
It may also help you to put a pillow between your legs or under the baby. This will give you increased cushioning that will protect the baby and help you sleep better.
Lift with your legs: This is another important thing to remember because by lifting the wrong day you are increasing the danger to you and your unborn child tenfold. Make sure you are lifting right!
To properly lift, you need to squat down the object and once you are going back up, make sure all your weight is on your legs. After all, your legs are meant to be doing all the work!
You need avoid using your waist or back to try to lift something. Especially if the object is heavy, it is just too dangerous because the object can throw out your back.
Sit and stand properly: You need to also practice proper sitting and standing techniques. While this may not have mattered before your pregnancy, now it can make or break the level of pain you will experience during your 9 months.
When you are sitting, you need to make sure that your feet are slightly elevated. Choose a comfortable chair that gives a lot of support to your lower areas.
If you don't think there is enough support, you can put a pillow in between the chair and your spine. This will help you feel more confident in sitting.
It's also important not to stand for long periods of time. This can put a lot of added pressure on your legs and back.
If you must stand for longer, constantly change your position. It can also help to occasionally to put one of your legs up on a chair or stool.
