Adelphi University Presents A Christmas Carol in the Olmsted Theatre on December 18

For the first time at Adelphi University, the classic Christmas tale by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol, will be performed as a live reading on Saturday, December 18, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AU PAC) in the Olmsted Theatre, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. This 90 minute Reader's Theatre style performance of Dickens' beloved story will be brought to life by theatre majors under the direction of associate professor Dr. Brian Rose. All are welcome to this free holiday event.

According to Dr. Rose, this traditional Dickens' story is a, "funny, sad, dramatic and frightening celebration of redemption that all of us can earn, and, like Scrooge, probably should." As the story unfolds, the audience will witness the embittered EbenezerScrooge's visits with the three spirits, as they attempt to make him appreciate the holiday season. Since there are so many dimensions and aspects to this visually engrossing narrative, Dickens' multi-faceted story has been entertaining audiences in various forms since the 1840s. Dr. Rose's intention for this production is for the actors to use their voices and acting skills in conjunction with carolers and the sounds of old Britain in order to "create the swirl of winter in the London streets on a long ago night." Brian Rose also said that, "for the actors, it will be a chance to learn and play: to work their accents, to strengthen their voices and, of course, to have fun with each other."

Dr. Rose has been an actor for more than 20 years and since he "would not want to miss out on the fun," he will join the students as Scrooge. Dr. Rose teaches performing Shakespeare and verse drama, special topics in guided auditioning in New York City, stage accents, advanced accents, and theatre history. He has been published numerous times and has received two certificates of merit in directing from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

This event is free but reservations are recommended. To learn more about AU PAC's 2010-2011 season, please visit aupac.adelphi.edu or call the AU PAC Box Office at (516) 877-4000.
