Adjusting After A Move

Moving into a new city can be overwhelming at first

. You probably don't know much about the area, or about the people living there. You may be intimidated by the prospect of meeting new people and having to learn a new set of names and faces. There are a few things you can do to get better and quicker acquainted with your new surroundings; a few things that will also make you feel more at home.

Upon moving into a new city, familiarize yourself with the layout of the area. Spend the first few days driving around and figuring out where things are. Make a mental note of how to get to the hospital, grocery store, post office, and other important locations. You'll start to feel more at home when you can navigate yourself around without having to stop and ask directions at every street corner.

To feel more settled, find good doctors in your area you can go see. Make an appointment to see few family practitioners, a few dentists, and a few specialists that you'll want to use in the future. Whether you move to Pleasanton or Pittsburg, you'll start to feel better about the move when you know who you can see in an emergency or if someone in your family gets sick.

Spend some time getting to know your new neighbors. Invite a few of them over and play games or just visit.

Making new friends will help you to feel a part of your community and more like you are a local, not just a visitor. If your neighbors aren't immediately outgoing or friendly, give them a while to warm up to you. It sometimes takes a few months to get to know people and have people get to know you. Don't worry if you don't have a raging social life after just one weekend.

As with any big change in life, give yourself a while to adapt to your new surroundings and be patient with the change. I've moved to many new places and felt very homesick the first few weeks. It sometimes takes a few weeks or even months to really feel like you are at home in your new city and not just a visitor. Take some time to familiarize yourself with your new area and find a few good friends that will help you adjust to the change and trial of moving to a new city.
