The Rothschild giraffe is the second most endangered species of giraffe in the world, with estimates suggesting there are only a few hundred left in the wild in their native Kenya.

Rothschild Giraffes can be easily distinguished form other giraffes due to the colouring of their coat which has a less jagged pattern than the reticulated giraffe and a paler hue than the Masai giraffe. Furthermore there are no markings on the lower legs.

Although more difficult to spot the horns are also another distinguishing feature. The Rothschild is the only subspecies to be born with five horns. Only two of these are actual horns on the top of the head. A third horn can be seen on the forehead and the two lie behind each ear.

Help save the species

Giraffes in general are classified as lower risk but the Rothschild giraffe is at a higher risk of hybridisation as the population is so limited in numbers. In the wild, it is increasingly rare for Rothschild giraffes to be seen in the wild with only a few spots remaining.

There are numerous ongoing conservation programs, which aim to expand the gene pool of the wild population of Rothschild giraffe, and by adopting a giraffe you can support these projects and play a part in saving this beautiful animal.
