Adsense's popularity with internet marketers has done a lot to push it at the forefront of the industry
. And you know how it is with popularity comes the write-ups and false reports. Lately, there have been highly popular free reports regarding Adsense from people like Scott Boulch (The Death of Adsense) and Joel Comm (What Google Never Told You About Making Money with Adsense) that have caused quite a buzz and ruffled a few feathers.
So what's wrong with Adsense?
Adsense offers a pretty simple and straightforward way of making money using your website. Sign up with the program and with a good enough traffic, you could actually make a few dollars just by having your visitors click on ads in your site.
However, Adsense by itself is not a moneymaker. Your site is. Adsense is just a way of squeezing some extra income out of what you already have as a website owner. In fact, Adsense will not earn you a single cent if your website is stale, irrelevant and lonely meaning, it has very little traffic.
The worst thing any website owner can do (and especially newbie internet marketers) is to sit around and wait for miracles to happen. No amount of Adsense click-on ads on your site will earn you money if no one clicks on them.
To actually make money using Adsense, you'll need to work a little harder than you wished focusing on increasing traffic level, developing a relevant content-rich site, linking up, joining indexes and search engine lists, using the correct location on your site, and generally improving your site's overall visibility and accessibility on the web.
No, there is nothing wrong with Adsense. It's just that a lot of people tend to rely on it so much as the only other source of income (apart from the main business of the site) that they fail to see other possibilities that they could and could have used to improve their internet marketing businesses.
What the Adsense ebooks say
These ebooks and free reports do not attack Adsense per se. What they are preaching about is the fact that it is not the single most important and feasible way to make money as an internet marketer. Sure, Adsense is still a good source of income, but it is only ONE source of income. There are others more and it is a big mistake to ignore these sources and stick to what is tried and tested.
Let's take for example the viral 'Adsense is Alive' ebook. What it is is a slightly allegorical tale about a kingdom (Google) and how its information program (Adsense) actually helps its people (internet marketers and affiliates) make money.
It maintains that Google remains a reliable and profitable company on the internet, and will continue to provide services and income opportunities via its Adsense program. It also mentions that nearly half of Google's revenues came from Adsense earnings and that Adsense remains a profitable program for the company.
What the ebooks are actually saying is that while Adsense remains a viable program, internet marketers should be aware that it is just one of the many potential revenue streams that marketers can use to earn online. Whether or not Adsense is the top income earner for websites really depends on the kind of site an internet marketer owns and how much work he is willing to do.
Where the big money comes from
Ideally, the biggest amount of earnings comes from the website's business, from the sale of its products and services. This is common sense, since as an internet marketer, this is your real purpose. Adsense and other banner ads are really just icing on the cake. With this in mind, the internet marketer can best focus his energies on creating a product that has quality and long-term benefits, a product that will actually sell by virtue of its real value.
Other than Adsense, there are also other ways to monetize a website including promoting products as an affiliate, generating and capturing leads and selling advertising space. One of the emerging favorites to replace Adsense is click flipping but if you look closely at how it works, click flipping actually uses pay-per-click networks like Adsense.
There is nothing wrong about going ahead and downloading these ebooks. You would do well with the information, especially since the authors are experienced internet marketers, some of whom have reached guru status. However, as with every other new information you encounter, examine the contents, take what is useful and ignore what is not.
Remember that much of these reports are gleaned from personal opinions of the writer and probably some of his acquaintances. When reading these books, just make sure that you know how to separate the facts from the arguments, since some ebooks are so well written that it is easy to mistake one for the other.
