Adult ADHD - Dealing With ADHD in Social Situations

Dealing with ADHD in social situation may be one of the hardest things

for those with the condition to do, and the inability to effectively do so may have a profoundly negative impact

on both their profession and personal lives. The situation may also be complicated

even further if the ADHD adult has a co-existing condition such as depression

or a phobia but that is a complex discussion for another time.

You may be sitting there wondering whether it is indeed attention

deficit hyperactivity disorder than is causing you to struggle in social

settings? Ask yourself these questions: Do I have trouble following

conversations? Do I struggle to stay focused when the conversation is longer

than expected? Do I fail to pick up on obvious nonverbal cues or body language?

Do extraneous noises or music distract me more than what would be considered

normal? Do I feel the need to dominate the conversation even if it is obviously

not welcome? Do I tend to make a fool out of myself by blurting out edgy,

inappropriate information during social interactions? Do I almost always feel

like a fish out of water during social gatherings?

If you answered yes to most of the questions above you likely are

someone with ADHD who struggles with social situations.

But the question is what should you do about it? There will be those

close to you that say you simply need to get with it, or change your

personality to better fit in. While there may be certain instances where this

is the unpleasant truth the bottom line is that you have attention deficit

hyperactivity disorder which is a condition which is partly biological and

partly genetic which gives you a somewhat different perspective on how to

interact socially.

You cannot be expected to change and even if you wanted to change chances

are you couldn't. Your mind will always feel like it has 16 movies all playing

at once with someone occasionally shouting fire in the background.

On the other hand learning how to adequately meld into social situations

just might be the difference as to whether you get that promotion at work,

maintain harmony at home, or be a big hit with your co-workers.

I am not sure there are any really good answers that will make you truly

at ease in social settings but there are things you can do to minimize the damage.

*The first idea I have found to be quite helpful for dealing with ADHD

in social settings is to stay positive no matter what! You should also make

your best effort to co-mingle this positive approach with your strengths, not

your weaknesses.

*The second is not to make the conversation all about you. Too much me

and too little you in the company of casual strangers may cast a negative light

on who you really are and what you have to offer. By only taking about yourself

you will have only presented part of the picture and oftentimes that part

doesn't show your strengths, rather it exposes your weaknesses. And we all know

how people love to gossip especially when it makes them look good and you look

bad.

*The third is not to push your point of view when you obviously are

outnumbered unless you can calmly debate with the best of them. If you fail to

follow this advice chances are you will become defensive, argumentative, and

flustered leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

* And lastly considered one of the homeopathic ADHD remedies to take the

edge off of some of the most problematic symptoms. Certainly medication of any

kind is not a complete solution but it just might give you a little edge for

effectively managing ADHD in a social setting.
