Adult Acne Causes And Adult Acne Treatments Explained By Edmonton Dermatologist Dr Lycka

Hi! This is Dr

Hi! This is Dr. Barry Lycka, host and founder of yourcosmeticdoctor.tv. I'm so glad to be writing articles for you about some of the newest advances in the world of beauty and cosmetic surgery.

One of the common questions I'm constantly asked is about adult acne. So today I am going to explain adult acne causes and highlight some adult acne treatments.

I have a lot of women in their 30s, even 40s and sadly, in their 50s or 60s with acne and they're not happy with it. Nothing makes them feel again like a teenager or even as a young girl. They hate it. They dont like the way that it looks. Unfortunately, adult acne is one of those things that is very common.

Now, what are the causes of adult acne?

One of the most common adult acne causes is genetics. Many people are predisposed to get acne. Many people have this over and over and over again. Now, the thing is, we can't always cure it, but we can control it and we have to have an understanding of the things that manipulate it and cause it to get worse.

Lets go through a couple of these.

One of them is stress.

Stress is a big culprit because it gets your human pituitary axis going, your HPA as its called which secretes steroids in your body, to get you ready for the flight-or-flight reaction and it also gets people into the mood for having acne. Now, the good thing is that by decreasing the stresses in your life, you can get your acne to diminish.

Okay, thats one of the things you can do.

Now, another thing you can do is modify your diet. Diet has a big effect on acne.

What aspects of your diet causes adult acne?

Well, we know for a fact its dairy products because dairy has hormones in it and hormones make acne get worse. So decreasing the amount of dairy, or eliminating it from your diet is very important. Now, if you take dairy out of your diet, you do need to supplement with vitamin D - about 2,000 international units a day and then youll do just fine.

Now, a second aspect of your diet that causes adult acne are foods with a high glycemic index. Now, what's a high glycemic index? Well, they are foods that are usually complex carbohydrates such as breads, such as wheat, such as things like rice. You have got to be very careful about those, because they cause acne to get worse.

So decreasing foods with a high glycemic index helps to control adult acne.

Okay. We know the things that cause it. We know the things you can modify. Now, let's go over what a doctor can do.

I am often asked, 'How can I treat it? What is a treatment for adult acne?'

Well, one thing you can do is do nothing and it will go away, but unfortunately, you might be as old as I am by the time that happens and I still get the odd pimple now and again. So please dont wait.

A second approach is what I call the traditional approach to treating adult acne.

In the traditional approach, we use things like antibiotics and creams and also even birth control pills and other hormonal blocking agents that get the acne better. We also use things in a spa like chemical peeling and things like microdermabrasion to help acne get better and those things help a lot. So you should talk to your healthcare professional, preferably a dermatologist and they'll help you to treat adult acne.

The third option is what I call lasers.

Now, lasers help us a great deal and sometimes we use things like alpha levulinic acid to get down into the pores to make the acne get better. Now, when we do that, we can then use a light source such as a laser to activate these chemicals and shut off the acne.

I've had great success with this as a treatment for adult acne, and people are tremendously happy making their acne going away with this.

The last option is a drug called Accutane. Now, many of you might have heard that Accutane is a dangerous product. Well, I really don't find Accutane to be dangerous at all. We found that it is actually one of the best products invented in the last 30 years to treat adult acne. In adults, we can use it in different ways than in kids, such as low dose acne. If you have any concerns about Accutane, come in and see a health professional. Come in to talk to me, for example. I'd love to help you.

Now, those are the things we can do to help treat your adult acne, its a marvelous way to help people enjoy their lives fuller and be happier about themselves.

I look forward to connecting with you and if you have any questions for me on adult acne, and would like further advice on adult acne treatments, please contact me via any of the methods listed in the 'About the author' box below, ask your question, and I will be back with an answer for you !
