Desktop based EMR has its own merits and demerits and same applies to web EMR (or online EMR). However, there are certain advantages available with web EMR that sets it apart from its counter part desktop version.

A desktop EMR is installed on to the computer of the user. A user doesnt have to bother about network hardware, internet connection and data security issues. Data security is a very important factor and in case of a desktop EMR the user doesnt have to be worried about the unauthorized access. However, when using a desktop EMR a user gets tied up with the computer system he or she is using. The data is stored in the local hard disk of the computer and in order to have access to it the user has to use the same computer system, which is not the case with web EMR or online EMR.

On the other hand a web based EMR provides with great flexibility as regards accessing patient medical records. The data is stored centrally across the network and hence it can be accessed from any where and any point of time. This could prove to be a boon in case of emergency situations. However, a web based EMR would require additional network hardware, internet connection and biggest issue being the risk or doubt of data security. As the data is stored centrally across the network, a user may have a doubt of it being getting used by unauthorized access.

A web based or online EMR may be at risk of unauthorized access, however, with the advancement of internet technology and HIPAA guidelines the web based system has become much safe and secure. If the system is based on advanced technology and HIPAA guidelines there is no need for user to be worried about the data security issues. A web based EMR could be of great benefit not only in terms of accessing information but also in the process of integrating the patient records with EHR systems, other useful utilities that can help to generate meaningful data, which can aide in the overall process of diagnosis and treatment.

A desktop or web based EMR, is often a question among physicians and hospitals as regards its selection. Truly speaking, nothing comes without a price and so is a web based or online EMR. For sure it may cost more as regards internet hardware, internet connection and data security issues. However, when we take into consideration its advantages as compared to its desktop version, for sure the advantages side weights higher than the disadvantages side. Hence, the web based system could be a great option for physician practices as well as hospitals.
