Advantages Of Water-based Polyurethane
There are many reasons to choose a water-based floor coating over the alternatives
, here are just a few:
1) Water-Based is More Durable
Our preferred water-based polyurethane was tried vs. the leading oil-based polyurethan by means of the Taber Abrasion machine. This machine tests a finish's ability to withstand abrasion like scuffing and erosion from regular surface friction. Test results determined that the water-based finishes were 5 times more resistant than the average commercial-grade oil-based urethane.
2) Fewer VOCs
A number of solids and liquids can discharge VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). The gases released can have damaging effects on the health of those exposed. VOC also merge, in the presence of sunlight, with other elements and form smog which is a significant air pollutant. Because of this, the government now restricts the level of VOC's that can be present in certain products.
*Classic oil-based urethane finishes contain twice as much VOC as a water-based finish.
*Basic Coatings waterbased coatings produce less odor than aromatic OMU's.
*Green: Several of Basic(R) Coatings waterbased finishes meet the most stringent of government regulations and LEED requirements.
3) Faster Drying
Two to three hours is all it requires for a water-based finish to dry. Oil-based finishes will take between 8 and 24 hours to dry. Multiple coats of water-based finish can be put on in one day with job taking less time and back in use faster.
4) Faster Cure Times
Seven days is the cure time for a water-based finish, while it takes 30 days for an oil-based coating to sure. 90% cured in 24 hours, our preferred water-based finish means less downtime before your space is safe for use again.
5) Less Yellowing
You never have to worry concerning yellowing with water-based finishes. Oil based coatings take on a yellow shade with increasing UV exposure. If the deep, enhanced look of oil-based finishes is what your project requires, we use a water-based finish that includes an organic tung oil for deeper color but will retain clarity over time without yellowing. It's the best of both worlds.
6) Non-Flammable
Petroleum distillates, That are included in oil-based finishes, are highly combustible. Water-based finishes are neither combustible nor flammable. The vapors of OMU's are also combustible or flammable. Any rags, applicators or additional tools with OMU residue have to be stored in a safety container to prevent their combustion.
