Thanks to advances in technology, being able to produce to high-quality compost on a regular basis has never been easier. If you have not seen today's modern composters, then you're in for a big surprise.
One of the best advances in composting technology is the tumbler composter. This is simply a barrel that is suspended on a steel frame and there is usually one or two doors were you can put your organic material in.
There are three reasons why a tumbler composter is such a huge advantage over the traditional compost pile.
Physical Labor
First of all, having to use a shovel to constantly aerate your compost pile is a lot of work. Also many people have back problems, which would prevent them from properly maintaining their compost pile.
But with tumbler composter, all they have to do is either turn the crank if it is run by gears or simply rotate the drum. This is usually very easy because most of them have ball bearings installed.
Proper Aeration
The second big advantage is that it's very easy to maintain proper aeration of your compost pile. A rotating composter allows all the particles to get exposed to air during the tumbling process.
This is something that is much harder to do when you have a compost pile and you have to do it with a shovel.
Particle Size Breakdown
Another big advantage of a tumbler composter is that the tumbling action breaks down particles to smaller sizes. The smaller the size of particles inside the composter, the more quickly they turn into compost.
In fact many of these tumbling composters actually have fins inside the barrel to help facilitate this breaking down process.
