The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania offer endless opportunities for relaxing walks over gentle terrain. If you choose to stay in a city, the historic town centres of Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius are compact with a rich cultural history and plenty of places to sit and watch the world go by. The coasts offer lots of walks along stretching beaches. There are easily accessible lakes and forests inland. Even the densest forests have clear paths for gentle rambling. Moderate

The Isle of Skye has every variety of walking and trekking paths. A walk along mountain and moorland tracks for up to eight hours day is suitable for anyone with moderate trekking experience. But you do not have to be a tough mountaineer to climb to the summits of the Red Cuillin and Skye's most beautiful mountain, Bla Bheinn. There are windswept bays and deep fjords along the coastline. Visit Provence in southern France to see the lavender fields in June for a more exhilarating tour. You can walk through forests or rocky wild scrub in this semi-arid region that has 300 days of sunshine during the year. There are well-stocked markets in towns like Buis les Barronnies and Nyons where you can buy some tasty local food for lunch or dinner.

Strenuous

If you have top physical fitness and lots of mountain experience, try the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal for a trekking holiday. This is adventure travel at its best and most strenuous. Trek around the Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Peak and take in the views of the Earth's biggest mountains. Here you need to be accustomed to high altitudes as you will reach elevations of more than 5,300 metres (about 16,000 feet). Try the Upper Mustang Trek in eastern Nepal if you want to walk through the wilderness.

Walk along the Jebel Toubkal trek in Morocco's Atlas Mountains if you want a real challenge but only have time for a short tour. This is a perfect holiday for about three to four days. The route takes you to the Nelter Refuge at an altitude of 3,200 metres (about 10,000 feet). Enjoy the Berber culture and visit pre-Islamic archaeological sites such as the Saint's Tomb at Sidi Chamharouch.
