Advertising With Sign Spinners And Twirlers
Many years before sign twirlers came along, someone was looking for a new way to advertise and market their business
. They came up with the idea to pay some poor person to stand out on a busy street corner and hold a sign with the business name on it. This probably worked for a while, until people eventually grew accustomed to seeing a person with a sign in that location. So lets say the business was a bacon business (stick with me here) and the managers racked their brains once again trying to come up with an idea for attracting potential customers attention. Someone came up with the crazy idea to have an employee still stand on the street corner with a sign, but this time the employee would be dressed in a costume lets say it was oh, I dont know a bacon costume. As you can imagine, this caught the attention of many passers by (wouldnt you notice a giant piece of bacon standing on the corner?) who would go into the business the next time they needed bacon. And once again, it worked for a while, then people grew tired of the giant bacon.
Now what? After many years of the standing bacon (although most businesses still use the costume tactic), someone had the idea to have someone still stand on a street corner (stay with me here) with a sign, but they would attract the attention of people in such a way that they would not offend, not get in the way but would still stick out. And, long story short, sign twirlers came to be. Now these talented guys have to practice a long time with their signs to get a sort of routine down (or at least an idea of what their moves are going to be), and they have to have some muscles, endurance and yes, courage! Would you go stand on a corner and twirl a big sign? Many people would! These sign twirlers are some of the neatest people to watch, even if they are not doing anything super fancy or awe inspiring. Nothing is on fire, nothing blows up, there are no special effects, no magic tricks. Just the sign twirlers and their signs out there having a good time, attracting peoples attention in a positive way for the company they are advertising for.
Although a lot of companies still use the costume gig, people have become so accustomed to them that much of the time they do not even bother looking at the sign the bacon (or chicken, clown or cow) is holding. In fact, many people now turn their heads and pretend not to see the costumed person. However, sign twirlers have a way of making people notice them, they make people want to try to read the sign, and they make people want to watch of course, having people want to look at the advertisement is much more effective as a marketing technique than it is to have people turn away and pretend to not notice the giant milkshake holding a sign.
