Since the first personal computers became available the question was always how to

make them smaller and more transportable and through many years of development that question was answered with the creation of the first wave of laptop computers.

These laptops, as the shorthand came to be, are battery powered and have screens built in which enables them to be taken and used anywhere without the need of plug sockets or a cumbersome monitor.

The first laptops were severely lacking in processing power in comparison to their counterparts desktop PCs and their battery life was somewhat limited however as second, third and fourth generations of laptops have been developed and released these issues have been addressed.

When buying a laptop you will have to decide what you want it for and what you want it to do as there are sacrifices to be made depending on your requirements; you can have a laptop which has the same processing power as a PC and has the same level of functionality but you will sacrifice longevity when it comes to battery life. If you want a high powered machine with a graphics card which runs the most demanding programs then you will have to sacrifice battery life as such hardware and programs require more processing power and more energy to run.

On the other hand you can have a laptop which has 10-14 hours of battery life but will not, in most cases, be anywhere near as powerful as a desktop. Such laptops tend to be designed for running only the more basic programs such as word processing programs and internet browsers and they are ideal for someone who is constantly on the go but needs to have access to a computer at all times during their day.

Such examples are examples of extreme ends of the spectrum and there are machines which are designed to offer you the best of both worlds and so it is up to you to decide what your requirements are as these will help you make an informed decision as to which laptop is the best for you.

It is always advisable to seek help and advice when making a decision on what machine you would like to purchase as there are so many out there and it can be confusing for those of us who are not as tech-savvy.
