We're frequently called upon to find hotel accommodation for friends

, due to the fact I've been an accommodation agent for over 20 years. There are many places I'm aware of that most people wouldn't know, and I research all the top web sites for people when looking for hotels.

We've been all through the country, and know lots of different towns, staying at a large number of bed and breakfasts and hotels in this time. This is the primary reason people respect my opinion when I tell them places they could stay in a particular region.

On this particular occasion, a friend of mine asked me about hotels in the UK. They already knew the area they wanted to stay in, so asked me for my advice on finding hotels in Slough that would be suitable for them, given that I know them already and could help choose somewhere they'd like.

When you're looking to choose somewhere to stay, it's important to know the purpose of your visit, so you can work out what sort of things you might want when you're there. There are several issues here, which I always think of when I'm looking to give my advice.

You'll want to be aware of the details of your visit. For instance, is your stay in the UK for business or pleasure, or a bit of both? Deciding what the motivation for being there is can help you decide on the ideal hotel for your purposes - if you need wifi access, for example.

You'll also want to be sure of what you'll be doing in the evenings. Do you want to eat in the hotel? In which case you need to find one with a restaurant. Or do you want to sample some local eateries? In which case you'll need to be near the centre of town, or at least near to some restaurants you know of.

Is it important to you to keep fit while you're there? If this is a factor, you'll want somewhere with gym facilities and / or a swimming pool. Or at least you'll want to know that there are these facilities nearby to your hotel, preferably ones with an arrangement to allow you to use them for free.

Once I'd developed a short list of likely candidates, I went through them and together we isolated the three or four that seemed best. Then we checked for availability and booked online. Taking these simple steps will help you enjoy your time in the United Kingdom, without having to be concerned about your accommodation.
