Having fun is for everyone, regardless of age. Throwing a party is a great way to get together with friends and family even for the elderly. When you are in a retirement home or MI assisted living community this is doubly important. Summer is the perfect time to have a party outdoors and even have a themed party. If ever there was age group that needs more parties its the seniors. It is important to remind parents, grandparents, and even friends that being young is not just how long you have been on this earth, but is also a state of mind and an outlook on life.

The first thing to remember is that decorations make a party. If you are pushing a theme then related decorations are even more important. Lets say you are throwing a luau; have some leys to hand out when people get there, recommend that guests dress for the tropics, and having flowers that are native to the tropics like Bird of Paradise are all important. Remember that the atmosphere you create can set the tone for the whole party.

Send out invitations to your party! Even if you are in a retirement home get some made and slip them under the door, just because you all live near each other doesnt invitations less important. Have them fit the theme if there is one and most importantly pick a memorable name. A name like Geezers Disco or Grannies Shindig can keep people talking about it for months.

Music is a crucial aspect of a party. Stick to a theme if you have one but music from back in the day is always a great fallback. Playing hits from back in the day is a great way to inspire some dancing. Old favorites like the Mashed Potato or The Stroll are perfect.

Something that is important that you may not think about is having an ending time for the party. Some seniors may have medicinal needs at home and having a good idea or set time when things are happening allows them to plan accordingly.

Something that could be fun is having the seniors all bring a picture of when they were younger. You could even have a table setup with a list of names and have people try to match pictures with the names. This is a great way to have some fun and thing about the old days.

Throwing parties is not just for the young and even more important for the old. Even if you are in a retirement home you should make and extra effort to throw a party. Even if its a party because its Tuesday and you have people bring their favorite stories about their most memorable Tuesday. As a culture we love excuses to party, and the elderly should be no exception. Having fun is extremely important and everyone should make an effort to have a little more fun in their day. So call up your friends or even grandma and start brainstorming!
