There was a time in the recent past that the only people interested in energy saving

light bulbs were those very interested in the environment and the researchers studying energy conservation. However, with many countries now requiring every person to convert to energy saving bulbs, they are everyones concern. And as with any change there are always a few holdouts, a few who see the problems and drawbacks and not the benefits. Their issues fall into a few categories, health, hardware and visual appeal.

Some people fear that energy saving bulbs will cause or increase health problems. One of the concerns is that it can bring upon epilepsy in people and worsen the disease in those that all ready have it. This is because it has been shown that certain light movement, such as flashing or strobe lighting does bother epileptics and may bring on seizures. There were some complaints with the first energy bulbs; however, the newer models have solved this problem by increasing the frequency to eliminate the flickering.

Another concern was with the mercury that was used in the earlier bulbs. It is true that mercury is a dangerous substance and if a bulb broke and one was exposed to the mercury you would need to seek medical help. However, the new design energy saving bulbs do not contain much mercury and are not so dangerous to hold or store. Specialist disposal is often necessary and consumers are encouraged to recycle properly.

Some people worry that energy bulbs will not fit into their current fixtures. Manufacturers have created bulbs with the traditional mounts, including Edison Screw GU10, and Bayonet Cap, and these come in many sizes. There are energy saving bulbs that fit into three-way light fixtures and also bulbs that fit into dimmers. There are energy bulbs for light strips, outdoor fixtures, and recessed lighting. And there are some new designs, such as rope lighting, that consumers like better than the previous light strings.

Finally, there is a concern with the looks and aesthetics, as many people use decorative lighting throughout their homes and do not want chunky bulbs. Energy saving bulbs are available in decorative shapes, including candle light, globe, and spiral. Some are low power wattage, and do not get hot, so they are perfect for vanity strips and accent lighting. Todays energy saving bulbs also match the same light color put out by the old incandescent bulbs, and few can tell the difference. Energy saving bulbs are also available in multiple colors, for decorative areas.

While the first bulbs had drawbacks, it seems that most of the concerns have been addressed and corrected. Todays energy efficient bulbs are safer, fit our current hardware, and are visually pleasing. And with all those qualities, add in the facts that they are cost effective and energy efficient and they are the best bulbs to use. These bulbs are the present and the future, and we can expect developers to continue to find ways to improve them even more.
