Affiliate Internet Marketing: Why 95 Percent Of Affiliates Don't Make Any Money And How You Can

While doing some web research for an article I was writing on affiliate marketing

, I kept running across statistics that said that 90-95% of affiliates don't make any money in affiliate marketing. Now, I don't know if they mean "any" as in $0, but I found this to be true - based on my own efforts in this arena. And, it didn't change until I got serious.

Following are three reasons I believe the above stat - again based on my own experience.

I. Easy to Join: It's ridiculously easy to join most affiliate programs. In most cases, all you have to do is create a link. It takes all of 30 seconds.I can't tell you how many affiliate products I've signed on to promote, then promptly abandoned a day, a week or a couple of months later because I was on to the next thing.

For example, I have an affiliate program for my ebooks, with - as of this writing - over 500 affiliates in it. But guess how many make sales each month? It's usually less than 10. And, it's usually the same handful. This is true for most who operate affiliate programs.

II. Laziness: I'm not going to try to sugar coat this. I used to be a lazy affiliate marketer. Sure, I'd write an article or two and place a link on a blog, but that was about it. The mistake that many beginner affiliate marketers make is that they get hooked on the idea that to make money in affiliate marketing is easy. And it is.

But, what's easy about it is joining the program and the fact that you don't have to invest in producing your own product/service. But, you do have to put in some marketing elbow grease. Otherwise, how the heck is anybody gonna know that you're promoting this great product that's' going to revolutionize their lives!

III. Lack of Know How: This may be one of the biggest reasons many don't make money in affiliate and internet marketing. Marketing is a learned skilled. Add to that the fact that the internet has made things even more competitive, it's understandable that you can get stalled at the starting gate.

This can be easily remedied though.

Buckle down and do some research. Select two or three successful affiliate marketers and sign up for their newsletters. Read every word - religiously - to duplicate their success.

Now that you have some insight into what it takes to make money in affiliate internet marketing, following are a few quick tips on how to be in the 5 to 10 percent who make money at it.

Time: As in, carve out a specific amount you can devote to it consistently. Treat your affiliate internet marketing career like a job; this means putting in consistent hours.

Constantly Study: I read affiliate marketing material all the time -- free ebooks from internet marketing gurus, their newsletters, troll their websites, stalk their Twitter streams, etc. You have to to learn, tweak and test so that you get better.

Don't Promote Too Many Products: When you first start out, you're going to be learning the ropes. So the bulk of your time is going to be spent learning and then fine-tuning your marketing efforts. So I advise starting out promoting no more than two products.

As you learn more about marketing - and especially internet marketing - you can add more products to your list, because then it'll just be a matter of rinsing and repeating your processes to earn more.
