Basically they are offered by merchants as a way of marketing their products for a percentage of the price of their products. In the online world affiliate commissions can range from a few percent to as high as 100% of the price of the product. However most online affiliate commissions are around 50% of the price of the product. Merchants love affiliates because in exchange for a percentage of the product sale price they get the affiliate to advertise their product for them. This can in some cases be cheaper than them advertising their product directly.

Because of some marketing programs one finds online affiliate marketing is sometimes seen as some sort of scam. However affiliate marketing is a legal way of making money, it is not a pyramid scheme or multi-level marketing and is used by lots of people to make an extra income and in some cases a substantial income.

With affiliate marketing you do not have to pay someone to get started or build down lines as all your commissions are dependent on your efforts only and not that of others.

Advantages of Affiliate Programs.

Affiliate marketing programs have advantages over some of the other ways of making money in the online world. You do not have expenses like you do when you open an online store, market your own product and collect money online. The merchant processes all orders, credit card payments and shipping of the products. All you have to do as an affiliate is get people to the merchants sales page to buy the product. You do this by promoting merchant products and/or services by using a specially coded link to their website. When someone clicks on your link and buys a product the merchant tracks your link and pay you an agreed commission for that sale.

If a merchant has done his job correctly his sales page should take over and sell the product to the prospect who used your affiliate link. This benefits you in that you have to do very little other than create the initial contact or ad to sell the product. That said some products do require pre-sells such as product reviews for you to sell them. There is also nothing wrong with you providing an optin box on some sort of pre-sell page such as a squeeze page to collect emails for followup and to sell additional products. However this is not recommended if the merchant also uses a follow system as it will confuse the prospect and may lose you a sales commission.

Another way you can make money using affiliate marketing is set up a blog and write about products. Within these blog posts you can have embedded links and links to find out more about products which are are in fact your affiliate links to a merchants sales page. However to blog about product you need to do research and find out what are the needs and/or desires of the people looking to buy the products you are promoting. Then it is just a matter of targeting your blogs posts to solve these problems with products where you can earn a commission. An example might be that a parent has a child with head lice so you could tell them how successful a certain head lice comb was when you treated your own child. Best idea is to blog about things that interest you as you can write about your frustrations and how you solved them.

Remember you do not have to be an expert writer to be a successful affiliate marketing blog poster. All you have to do is find out what are peoples problems and get your message across to them by using relevant keywords. Keep researching for new ideas and new products relevant to your blog and blog about them. Keep your posts genuine and give your personal opinions thus allowing your enthusiasm and empathy to show through to like-minded people so that they will read more of what you have to say.
