Affiliate Marketing: Finding the Right Niche

Finding the Right Niche

Finding the Right Niche

To be a successful affiliate marketer, you have to be able to find and take advantage of niche markets. Instead of focusing your efforts on trying to make money off of a broad niche like "health and fitness", instead break the market into sub-niches and try to identify the ones that aren't completely saturated. This isn't an easy task but there are a variety of places you can look to increase the odds of finding one.

Look Online

Where better to look than in the same arena where you will be marketing your product? Look at the topics for articles in any of the major article databases. Start at the main topic you are interested in and expand that topic by clicking on it. This should open up the sub-topics menu which can usually be broken down even further. Each of these sub-topics represents a sub-niche that can potentially be exploited. Instead of choosing a broad niche like "dogs", choose a sub-niche like "dog collars" or "dog ID tags" and market a product or service to a more targeted audience. Just for the record, these sub-niches are intended solely for the purpose of explanation. They should not be pursued without further research.

High-traffic sites like E-bay and Amazon.com are great places to determine what trends are currently on the rise. Look at the best-sellers list on Amazon and determine what niche they are marketed to. Many of the non-fiction books on the best-sellers list will be targeted to exploitable niches or sub-niches. Go to your local bookstore and flip through the book to identify sub-niches that are worth looking into.

Move Your Search Offline

The smart affiliate is always on the lookout for new markets that can be exploited for profit and will take this search offline as well. Being constantly aware will identify sources of income that won't always be obvious to those that limit their research to the Internet. Look for busy kiosks at the mall and check out what they are selling. When you walk into a store, be aware of the products that are prominently placed in high traffic areas. These items are usually big sellers and are placed there for a reason.

Children are another great resource for hot new trends. Teens and tweens are usually more in tune with what is going to be the latest craze. If you have children, talk to them about new fads at school. Take them to the store and watch what toys and clothing styles they gravitate to. You've been paying for them for years. It's time they help you make a little money.

Media

Magazines and newspapers can provide good ideas for profitable niches. Look in trade magazines and check the advertisements to see what services and products people are selling. These ads usually aren't cheap and wouldn't be in the magazines if they aren't attracting customers. When you're watching TV, instead of tuning out the ads pay attention to them. Identify the target market and what niche or sub-niche they are taking advantage of.

What Next?

After you find the leads, it's time to explore them and identify the ones that are potentially profitable. Use a keyword research tool to find out whether your leads get a respectable amount of search engine traffic. There is no point in trying to sell a product to a sub-niche if there are only a couple searches a month for the applicable keywords. Creating wealth online is all about generating traffic so look for sub-niches that generate a decent amount of search engine traffic.

After finding a sub-niche, check out how much competition you have. You can make it in niches that are full of competing websites but it will take a lot more work. On the other hand, you have to remember that most sub-niches have already been discovered. If there is no competition there at all, it may be an indicator that there isn't any money to be made. Competition indicates an active market where there are buyers looking to make purchases. From here, it's is simply a matter of finding a product or service that is needed by people in this sub-niche and marketing it to the masses. Take advantage of the ideas in this article and you'll be on your way to making money online.
