Almost trillions of dollars of minerals has been discovered by the US in Afghanistan, news of which came out 2 days back. If you think about it, nothing positive actually came out of Afghanistan in the recent history, and in that regard, this news was a welcome change than the usual.

In a country full of the NATO army generals fighting a war to get hold of one man, news about minerals in Afghanistan surely was an interesting read the world over. To put things in perspective, the New York Times reported "A team of U.S. geologists and Pentagon officials has discovered vast mineral wealth in Afghanistan, conceivably enough to turn the scarred and impoverished country into one of the world's most lucrative mining centers". They have went ahead and quotedGen. David H. Petraeus,commander of the United States Central Command -"There is stunning potential here".

Now the interesting bit - After getting into details of the discovery, one notice's that the Soviet's while they had a base in this war trodden country in the late 1980's had already done a lot of survey's and research which prompted the world about the vast mineral wealth of Afghanistan. So, if the Soviet's already knew it, and when there are various books already written about minerals in Afghanistan, what has really the US discovered? As per reports, old library's in Kabul are full of research papers and survey's done by the Soviets giving enough evidence that they had found all what the US is now prescribing as its own prey.

The timing of this news is quite interesting. US Government strategists must have thought, at a time, when there is simply no direction of the war in Afghanistan, with the public opinion the world over, and also in the US was against their own government for dragging a war which has mainly killed innocents, a news which can bring about a positive development in Afghanistan could be the reason now, for the US to stay in this country. Obviously, now to exploit the resources.

It is quite funny, that an announcement which the Mining ministry of Afghanistan should have done, was in reality done by the head of the US armed forces central command. To make things worse, and worrisome for the local Afghani population, the Mining Ministry of Afghanistan is famous to be the most corrupt in the country.

Just a month back,Mr. Hamid Karzai, Afghan President, made an announcement in a summit in the US, that Afghanistan's untapped mineral deposits could be as much as $ 3 trillion. Now within days, the US makes a guesstimate that the mineral wealth is in trillions in Afghanistan.

I think it is reason enough for the world to see these happenings and so called discoveries in suspicion.
