Afraid Of Getting A Tattoo? Here's What To Expect
Make sure that you eat something within 4 hours prior to going in to have your tattoo. Some artists will not tattoo you if you have an empty stomach. Never drink alcohol or take any narcotics the day you are having your tattoo. Wear appropriate clothing so that the tattoo artist doesn't have to fight your clothing to get to your skin. Be prepared to be still even though it may hurt some. The less you move around, the better quality the tattoo will be. Remember, that it's the first minute or so that's usually the worst. After that, your body is more used to it and it is more bearable.
First, the tattoo artist must wash his or her hands and put on single use, disposable gloves. All furniture, counter tops, and equipment that cannot be autoclaved should be wiped down with an EPA approved disinfectant. All areas which may be touched with contaminated gloves should be wrapped in clear plastic to prevent cross-contamination. New, sterile needles, instruments and disposable instruments and supplies, and fresh ink for each session (loaded into disposable ink caps which are discarded after each client) should be opened from their original packages or pouch from the autoclave in front of you. A mixture of water and antiseptic soap should be used on the area to be tattooed. The area should then be shaved with a new, unused disposable razor that is then discarded.
First, the design will next be drawn or stenciled onto your skin. The outline or black work of your tattoo is done first with a single-tipped needle and a thin ink. A moist towel is used to wipe the area as the tattoo is being applied to remove the excess ink. The right handed tattoo artist usually starts at the bottom right side of the tattoo and works up so that he won't smear the stencil when wiping off the excess ink. Left handed artists usually start on the left side. After the outline is completed, the area will be cleaned with soap and water. The artist will then use a thicker ink and various needles to create an even, solid line. The needles will go approximately 1/16" into the skin. If the artist goes too deep, there will be shadows of ink outside the lines underneath your skin; ink where it doesn't belong; and you will scar a lot. Punctures that are too deep will also cause excessive pain, bleeding, and delayed healing. If the needles do not go into the skin deeply enough, there will be uneven lines. Shading will be done next after the area is cleaned with soap and water. The color is added last after the area is cleaned again. The tattoo artist overlaps each line of color to make sure that your tattoo has even hues and that no color lifts out during healing. This also ensures that the artist doesn't miss any sections of the skin.
Finally, a last cleansing of the area is done with a disposable towel to make sure that any blood and plasma has been removed. A sterile bandage is then applied. Some tattoo artists use ointment throughout the process to help the needles glide more smoothly over the surface of the skin and then once again before placing the sterile bandage on. The time it takes to get a tattoo varies with size and complexity. A smaller tattoo done by machine may take fifteen minutes; another might take hundreds of hours or multiple sessions. Prices vary widely for this service globally and locally, depending on demand, experience of the artist, regulatory fees, and local economy.
Now that you know what to expect when you get your tattoo, you can relax and enjoy the experience.
